I was accepted via the re-applicant route, Master's degree kind of thing. If you have a similar (or I guess, even non-similar) situation and need some advice, I am more than happy to help with questions!
Where did get your master's? and which dental school were you accepted if you don't mind me asking?

Yea no worries! I did a Master's in Public Health, and was accepted to UAB.
So is that SMP or a 2-years master's? Congratz!
My bf is planning to get a Masters in Public Health too this year and then applying to dschool. His undergrad gpa is about 2.74, but if he scores really well on the DATs and gets close to a 4.0 in his Masters, do you think he'll have a chance?
What were your stats like, if you don't mind sharing =)
Thanks for being so helpful!

Can you share your extracurriculars? Like what organizations/clubs you were involved in? Amount of community service hours....leadership experiences? And if you could take a guess, what do you think made you stand out and ultimately gain the acceptance at UAB?
We are in a very similar siutation! I recently completed my MPH in Public Health last May at UAB. I am applying to dental school at UAB for the 2010 cycle but the situation looks pretty bleak so more than likely I will be reapplying for the next application cycle. What concentration did you do for your MPH and how was your experience as a reapplicant? Thanks!
I did the Environmental Health and Toxicology branch, just for the sake of trying to take more sciences since a lot of the PH stuff doesn't necessarily fall under the sciences as defined by dental schools. To be honest, if I had it to do over again, I would have just taken as many post-bac science classes as I could handle. I ran into the issue a bit that the MPH doesn't have a lot of street cred with the dental schools, as the programs (as a general rule) aren't too terribly difficult.
I would say that what set my application apart is retaking the DAT--19 first go around with a retake of 20. Additionally, I scored a 25 on the reading comprehension section, which substantially helped my application. My undergrad GPA was far from stellar at around 3.1, but I worked hard during the PH and swung a 3.84. I think I mentioned it in a different thread, but the big thing to shoot for is to get the GPA/DAT scores as high as you possible can (I know, much easier said than done). Once you do that, you kind of get placed in the right 'pile', if you will. Getting in the right pile will also help score you an interview, and then all of your volunteer, extracurriculars, work, etc. can really help you shine.
Tried to touch on as much as possible, but let me know if I missed something you wanted to know
