Hi, Does anyone has a site that tells you all the prerequisites require by different schools? How come the prerequisites for Pre-dental is " less"compared to pharmacy? Can someone also tell me if interview is required for dental schools? is there a three year accerlated program? thanks.

1) You can buy the ADEA guide to dental school admissions, it's got everything you'd need to know. If not, each school's website will do it.

2) It's just what they've decided to do, and I can somewhat understand why you'd need more chemistry (like p-chem) for Pharm.

3)Yes, all schools require interviews. Thus incurring a lot of travel expensive if you get multiple interviews. I spend about 2k just on interview costs.

4) Yes, University of the Pacific is 3 years, and I think there might be another one on the east coast?

Hope that helps.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. Does dental school required good communication skills? Is residency required for new graduates?

The short answer is Yes, the long answer is, it depends. If english is your second language you may have a difficult time in the reading composition section of the DAT, and so there you have a gate keeper there. Also, you have to do an on the spot writing sample and just about every interview, so they can see if the quality of writing on your personal statement is actually how you write. Also, the interview is a good part of you selling yourself to the school, so if you are unable to effectively communicate your strong points and such, you may run in to complications.

Thanks for all the replies. Does the average dental schools required a lot presentations throughout the course? My communication is my weakness, i'm not sure if this is my right profession... Also, is DAT required? what subjects will be on the test? writing, english, etc..? thanks

From what I've heard most of the didactic (science lecture) classes are all just lectures with multiple choice / fill in the blank tests. The other large part of dental school is clinical, and take starts after your second year, but you have pre-clinical stuff before that where you're working on dummies, and that's, well - you're using your hands.

The DAT is required, it's all multiple choice and taken on a computer, the subjects are Bio, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, PAT (Perceptual Ability - search for it, it's difficult to explain), Reading Comprehension, and Quantitative Reasoning (Math).

Dental is one of those professions that's its very good to get some experience about the field before you start going down that path. You should do plenty of job shadowing before you pick that dental is for you. And you can always just work on your English skills if you need to, most community colleges have classes to help you with that if you need.

It is not clear what "less" courses you are referring to. In general the prerequisites for pharmacy, dental and medical schools are quite similar. There may be some pharmacy/dental schools that may require courses in anatomy/physio, micro, calculus, statistics, biochemistry and immunology. Others do not require these courses (not counting calc/statistics) because they are usually incorporated in the pharmacy/dental curriculum.

There might be a pharmacy school that requires p chem, although the course is usually reserved for those pursuing a Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry.
