I have been trying to get involved in more research too!!!! And it sucks b/c I have applied to all the hospitals in So cal and have gotten nothing in return.

does it matter if you get paid?

It's been my experience that it's much easier to gain research positions if you look up individual institutions, faculty profiles and interests (preferably find a professor who you have moderately common interests with), express that interest through an email/phone call, and inquire about their ability to take on a student who is really excited about that work, your background, and with your plans.

Esp. in So Cal, there's so many opportunities. Seeing you're from L.A., riceman04, I'd look into Harbor-UCLA, UCLA, USC, City of Hope, to start out. Good luck!

Ya, that's what I started doing. I even told profs I would volunteer!! I got interviews and stuff, but that's it. I am sooooooooooo disheartened right now it is not funny. Well, I will be off to UPenn in sept (for special science), so I hope I can gain some research experience there.

I would contact Debbie Cohen of the NIH postbacc IRTA program or technical IRTA program. I think they might be able to consider you if you have been in school recently and are planning on applying to medical school or graduate school. Check out this website for info and contact info for Debbie Cohen is also there:

best of luck and let me know if u have any questions about this program- i think it is excellent experience.

Would you consider Oak Ridge Natl Labs in Tennessee? You could apply as a lab tech there. Also, consider Los Alamos Labs in New Mexico.
Hope it helps
