I have a science professor in mind for a letter of rec, but he's a professor for the chem labs. I've had him for both gen chem lab and ochem lab so he would be a good person to ask but I'm not sure if there is anything against asking a lab professor for a letter?

Nothing against it especially if he's writing a great letter!

If you know him personally then I think it would be a great recommendation since you had him for several classes.
However, if you had a TA in charge of your labs, then your TA maybe the one writing the letter and the professor just signs off on it.
That's how it was at my school but I'm not sure how it is elsewhere.
