Hey guys! I'm getting my last few letters together and I am having a difficult time deciding who to ask one from between the dentist and oral surgeon I'm shadowing. I have great relationships with both but I think I would get a stronger letter from the oral surgeon. However, I have it understood that most schools want letters from a dentist and I'm not sure if they are super particular about it being from a GP and not a specialist. I'm also worried about the surgeon mentioning my goal to be an oral surgeon, since some schools are passionate about training GPs and not specialists. What do you guys think?

Going with the provider who will write the best letter is the most important thing, specialist or not. My dental letter of rec was from an oral surgeon as well, but it was never brought up. If you are concerned about the content, you could politely voice your concern with the surgeon and I am sure they will understand and steer clear of that subject - they understand that you have to get into dental school first. Better yet, give them some points you want them to hit that align with your story, resume, and PS. Don't mention OS in any interviews, plenty of time to express interest once you are in.

Okay I'll see if I can voice that when I meet with him next. Figured I would since I've read all over SDN about avoiding talking about specializing in interviews so I thought it would be a good idea to avoid that in my letters as well.
