So how may MSIV's have to work on Christmas Day? I am a fourth year and have to come in a full day to a rotation that eventaully not even be my specialty. I thought fourth year was supposed to be fun and relaxed......

I've been done since the 18th and don't return until the 7th.

Granted, if I wasn't on this rotation it'd be the 21st until the 7th.

I am off from the 21st till the 7th as well. Who in the world would have rotations going on over the holiday season?

Our school allows you to take an ER rotation during this time if you want to gain 2 weeks of vacation. That is the only way you would have to work during this time frame.

I had 2 weeks of break. I think UAMS recognizes that nobody gives a crap any more after the first semester of 4th year.

I would be surprised if they even noticed a fourth year student gone.

I have all of December off...which I am grateful for. Hopefully they have good treats at the hospital for you OP 😀

The attending said it was stupid so she sent me home, but no way to get to family and be back by Weds. But I do have to work both new years eve and day and they are making me come in on saturday becuase I have an interview.....At least I have rads for my next rotation, it might get better

The only people I knew who would have had to work on Christmas as an M4 were those on their sub-Is, and you might actually have been important to your team. I was on vacation for December for interviews and baby.

Sure, coming in for your Sub-I is necessary seeing as how you're technically the intern. But since OP said this probably won't be his/her specialty, it's unlikely he/she's got such a level of responsibility that no intern is carrying his/her patients... back me up here OP.

Those people should know to plan Sub-Is on a month other than December D:
Preferably early, so you can spend most of your 4th year on easy street.

Unless they were unlucky and had no choice in the matter 🙁

On Christmas at my hospital, every outpatient clinic was closed, and there were no elective cases/operations/procedures. The ED was the only place that was still probably staffed for full service. Everything else was call only. Our inpatient services were all very low census, because almost nobody schedules an elective procedure in the week before Christmas, and many of our attendings were on vacation.

If it was an ICU rotation or inpatient medicine, that's really the only reason I can see having to come in to work that day. They might not be "allowed" to let you go without permission from the school, since any given rotation has to have a minimum number of days in it. I would never make a student come in, unless I was told they had to. As an M3, we finished up ~2 days before Christmas and had ~10 days off or so. It was pretty nice.

This is an IM rotation, not a Sub-I though. There are interns present....Fortunately enough my next rotation is Rads....

Our blocks are designed to end so everyone has time off around x-mas. Even those doing winter sub-I's.

Honestly as a 4th year, unless you're doing a sub-I/AI or on some rotation where your residents won't be reasonable, you should be able to take off time when you have a good reason (Christmas, religious holidays, etc). I had a rotation where I came in 5 days out of 20 because of the sheer mass of interviews I had booked for that month. Still passed.

My school purposely put some research/scholarly activity block during mid-Dec - mid-Jan (where we complete a paper required for graduation), which I realllly appreciate. I do have a friend (different school) who had to go in on Christmas because she is on an ID rotation and the attending doesn't celebrate Christmas.

ETA: Even on my Sub-I last month, my resident didn't make me stay overnight on the night before Thanksgiving (when she was on call) in order to give me time to drive home for the holiday.
