So I graduate June 2012.

I'm planning on applying for NRMP next summer for 2012 match. Will have Step 1 and 2 CK/CS done by August, 2011, in time for apps.

Will this give me enough time if I want to match into Cali for 2012? Or do I have to wait for 2013 if I want to match into Cali?

Thanks!

Ideally you will have the PTAL at the time of application and list it as one of your LORs. Note that California tells you that it takes 6-9 months to obtain the letter. Therefore, to have it for September 2011 applications, you need to apply for it by January 2011. The application states that to get the PTAL, you need to provide a certified copy of your medical degree; thus it appears that you must have graduated before you can get the PTAL.

Those are the facts. Whether programs will grant interviews or rank you without the letter is better answered by those who have been through the process.

I might inquire - is it really worth it to delay training for a year to train in California (and this comes from a California native...it ain't all that)?

Hey WS

Yeh, thx for that. I was just on the NRMP website:

http://www.nrmp.org/data/resultsbystate2010.pdf

and saw that there are a fair amount of IMGs that match into Cali. So thought I would look into it. But yeh, it does sound like a pain/a lot of effort.

Realistically it still looks like NJ/NYC is my best chance stastically to match...maybe for my fellowship I can head west and have some fun in the sun 😀
