Not by the LCGME but it is by the UN and you get that ECFMG certificate also... that being said you can still sit for the USMLE when you finish so you can practice in the USA

Ummm... nice try, but not even close... looks like you might have been confusing the LCME with the ACGME... but... well... this statement was just so wrong/superficial... I'm sure you had good intentions... anyway...

Here's the deal: SGU is indeed not accredited by the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME), which is the accrediting body that, in conjunction with the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the American Medical Association (AMA), "legitimizes" all U.S., Canadian, and 3 of the 4 Puerto Rican MD-granting schools. However, SGU is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and are listed in the IMED directory. This makes them a "legitimate" medical school, at least in the eyes of the world and most regulatory bodies where it matters (including the U.S.).

Yes, you can sit for the USMLE - as you work on and get your Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification - before you graduate with your degree. But, this does not automatically mean you will be able to "practice in the USA" when you complete your degree. The process requires much more effort (e.g., getting a residency, applying for a license, finding a place to practice, etc.) than just sitting for and passing a few licensing exams.

This ECFMG certification allows you to apply for a medical license, but individual states have their own specific requirements on obtaining a medical license. Some states "ban" certain medical schools. Currently, the only state that SGU graduates may (and NB: I said "may") have a problem getting a permanent license to practice medicine is Texas.

Here are some relevant links that contain information you need to know thoroughly before you make the decision to go to the Caribbean for medical school:

Good luck. Do your homework. Don't trust or take at face-value what you read on an Internet forum. Independently verify everything.
