Quick question about dental residency....

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Only in the state of NY.

The state of Delaware has required a GPR for over 60 years, NY requires any post graduate program

Is residency hard to find if you attend an out-of-state school?

The ADA and ADEA have lists of all residency programs... most are looking forvariation in student selection, so "out of state" students are ideal.

Select a residency for the program - ask current residents/ and former graduates from your school. Visit programs. Also look at possible locations you may want to practice in, or spend one year in.

We have no dental school in Delaware, so all residents come from out of state dental schools. This year we have some from Maryland, Penn, Temple, UConn, Boston. Last year - Louisville, Virginia, Penn, Temple, Maryland, NJ. We try to blend our program from different schools... it helps the residents exchange ideas and challenges our attendings.

As I said before, we have had a required residency in Delaware for over 60 years (1940) and it has not reduced the # of dentists moving into the state and has improved the competency and level of preactice.

does the residency need to be located in delaware?

The states that require a residency such as Delaware, NY... require any accrediated program... it does not need to be in the state....

but we in delaware invite everyone to apply, we love/try to have a program with many schools represented... This year - Boston, UConn, Pitt, Maryland, Penn, Temple

Question for me: do a lot of those who go into GPRs tend to do a general program, or do a lot do the concentrated ones that are offered at most places: endo, implants, etc? Seems like a great way to get more practice at what you like if you decide not to specialize....

er, I guess I should have put this in the residency forum. Sorry! 🙁
