quick question about interviews for guys.

Do we need to bring a briefcase or anything like a folder with us to the interview? I just got an interview at NYU and I am very excited! I just want to know if its okay to go in a suit without anything, or is it necessary to bring some sort of folder or something. Any advice?

it's fine to go in wearing just a suit. generally the school gives you a folder filled w/ stuff about the school. make sure you have a pen, and you can use the papers in the folder to record any notes.

I actually picked up a leather bound portfolio for like 15 bucks... had a notebook, pockets for papers, and a pen holder in it. I only bought it because someone suggested it. I printed out my application, personal statements, and interview schedule and brought them along with me to read before the interview. But i don't think you need to bring anything other than maybe a pen like JB said. At the interview they gave me a folder filled with papers and brochure too, so I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

A white shirt represents honesty and integrity, so says my senior seminar instructor.

A colored shirt is considered more casual than a white one.

Always go white with a dark power tie (keep it solid and not busy) to compliment your dark suit. Always wear black or cordovan colored shoes.

Just what I have been taught many times.

If anyone interviews at Ohio State do not bring anything as they provide you with a leather protfolio with lotsa goodies in it as well as paper and a pen. very classy.

i am not a guy (in case you couldn't tell from the avatar😉 ) but i have noticed that the guys at the interviews i have been to bring a leather portfolio with a legal pad to take notes on---i think it looks more professional than the ppl who show up with nothing IMO.

in an interviewing book i read it says that you should always pull out the portfolio to show the legal pad and have your pen in hand like you plan on taking notes even if you don't actually take any notes. i think that is pretty solid advice. it makes you look interested and shows you are taking the process seriously by wanting to remember any bits of info. you learn during your interview. 🙂

seems like half the guys at my last interview wore a blue shirt, it was pretty funny since they were trying to look a little different but ended up looking the same, I for one wear a colored shirt but its very subtle and goes well with my suit/tie combination, but to each his own

What? A shirt is a shirt. As long as it is not a t-shirt, i think it is ok.
However, white is the shirt of choice if you are going for that mormon missionary look!

At my interivew at a school recently, one of the kids I was with had a friggin' mohawk about 3-4 inches higher than the rest of his messy hair. I overheard one of the deans say to another dean, "holy ****, that kid thinks he can interivew here with a mohawk!"

I was secretly laughing my ace off, he also had earrings for crying out loud.

If any of you fellas think that is appropriate, sorry it isn't. I was just as shocked as the deans.

I for one wear anything other than a white shirt because I feel that it better reflects me as an individual with personality. I do bring a leather notebook and wear a suit, but there is much more to impressing interviewers and becoming a dentist than wearing a white shirt and dark tie. As for the mohawk, the guy has balls. Being something other than a square is what some professions need.

yes, but it's all a matter of timing. he should have waiting until AFTER he was accepted and then come walking in the first day with his mohawk and piercings. don't put the cart before the horse 😉

I guess its the scientific method in me that says that if I changed ties and got into some schools and not others, the variable could have been the tie. but then I got to thinking of what if at the beginning I picked the wrong lucky tie, is it too late to switch? should I do half with one, half with the other???

Hey, wear whatever you want guys. Be "ballsy" and show up with earrings and a mohawk if you want to emphasize your non-conformist attitude on life. Leaves more spots for me.

Individual expression was fine for that liberal arts college you went to. It might even work if you were interviewing at some creative job like an advertising firm or newspaper. However, you're applying for professional school and should treat it with a certain degree of professionalism -- which includes your appearance, demeanor, and attitude. You wouldn't show up to an interview in a ballcap, tee-shirt, or your ratty all-stars trying to pass it off as "expression". Why should the rest of your appearance be anything other than well-trimmed and conservative?

And as someone who has seen a pant-load of college seniors dressing to the nines for this or that interview there is nothing more impressive, sharp, professional, and appropriate than a pressed white shirt, polished shoes, and a nice watch. Not only does the red shirt/black tie combo look cheap and fashionably forced, it also makes you look like the naive little college grad that you are who is trying to stand out in the crowd while, in the process looks just like everyone else. Dress like a grown-up for crying out loud...

dressing like a grown up does not have to mean dressing like everyone else a la Men in Black. In my opinion, a real grown up neither conforms to the "standard" nor follows the latest trends, but rather finds a happy medium between the two.

My suit will be a medium grey with a hint of olive green in it, three button, my shirt will be either french blue or a very light lavender, and I don't know what tie yet, probably a shade of blue. Black shoes of course. As someone who is quite comfortable dressing in a suit and tie, I think I will have no problem making a favorable impression by my appearance.
