I was looking at the list of unfilled programs and I have a question?

That is the difference between a “C program” and “P program”. For example, the surgery residencies are listed as either Surgery –general (C program) or Surgery –general (P program).

What is the difference?????? Thanks for the feedback

C stands for categorical, and P is for preliminary. Categorical surgery programs guarantee you a spot for 5 (or 7 in some cases) years. I don't know much about preliminary spots, but I think they are temporary. For example, if you take a preliminary GS spot, you have to perform well and hope a second year spot opens up for you. Also, many specialties require a preliminary year in another field. So, for example, someone who matched into anesthesiology or radiology may do a preliminary year in surgery as an intern before joining his/her specialty in PGY-2. I am sure someone else can elaborate and correct anything I have wrong.
