This decision was not unexpected and follows a national trend of decreasing numbers of inpatient psychiatry beds.
UCHs decision will in no way adversely affect the psychiatry residency or the associated faculty. The Colorado psychiatry residency, like many nationally, has recently been shifting clinical rotations from inpatient units to other settings, reflecting a change in prevailing practice patterns, the development of new treatment settings and modalities, and the decrease in the timed requirement for inpatient psychiatry in the ACGME accreditation standards.
