Assuming I send my application away mid-August, when would I be interviewing with dental schools (also assuming of course, I get interview offers!).

I might be out of the country for 2-3 months at the end of the year, which could provide conflict if the interviews are at that same time...

Thanks!!!

If you apply that late, your interviews will probably be October-Januaryish.

what r you gonna do if a school contacts you for interview during a period your out of the country?

IMO, don't apply this year if your going to be out for 2-3 months this winter.... thats just silly.

Well I would be back by the end of December and could interview starting from January, and I would be hooked up to the Internet and also ask my parents to check for interview letters in the mail.

Would it be possible to schedule interviews with all schools after the start of the new year even if they contact me earlier, like October?

🙁

You didn't think of this ahead of time?

I guess some schools might let you book that late, but that doesn't really look very good on your part. Best idea is to call the schools.

First, you should apply earlier than August if you can. You can submit your app through AADSAS before you've taken the DAT, since it takes a while for AADSAS to process the apps.

Secondly, if you get an interview and you're out of the country I think the school would be accommodating and give you a date after you're home -- although it may hurt your chances just because you will probably be interviewing after Dec 1st which is when a lot of the acceptances are given out.

If you take the dat 8/11 aadsas won't even get the scores for 2-3 weeks which means the application might not go out till September. With your gpa, why are you waiting so long to take the dat?

Thanks for the responses guys, I really appreciate it.

I guess the consensus is that I should not go out of the country. I live in California and the farthest I've gone from home is Nevada, so I wanted to take some time to travel and see the world. Looks like I'll have to postpone that trip. 😳

@mr24: Someone advised me to wait until August to take the DAT because he said my GPA is competitive enough that I should get into schools even if I apply later. He said the extra month or so of studying could boost my scores up significantly and I would be able to get into some top schools.

Would sending my application away in July and then taking the DAT in August be a good idea? I don't want to change the date I take my DAT, since I think I need the rest of the time from today until that very date to prepare enough to do well.

Whoever gave you the advice to take the DAT in August has no idea what they are talking about.

If you DON'T want to get into dental school this year, follow these steps:

1) Take the DAT in mid-August
2)Go on your trip and tell schools that want to interview you that you'll just take their interview in a couple months when you get back.

And what are the steps to take if I do want to get in? 🙂

What do you guys recommend as the latest date to take the DAT then???

Take your DAT early, BEFORE the cycle starts...or at least at the beginning of it. Not really sure of a "latest" but August is bad.

Also, did the same person that gave you that advice tell you to take that trip? If so, I think you got trolled IRL.

Third, even with high stats, you should apply early. Applying late just lowers your chances of getting in, no matter how high your stats are.

The OP has a 3.9+ GPA. He can take the DAT after August if he scores well enough on the DAT and get interviews at most places.

But, I agree. I would take it ASAP. Like June or whenever you are ready.

end of june at the very latest . that's just my opinion .

Thanks very much guys. Looks like I may have to up the studying and get ready ASAP.

And you guys would say get my application in ASAP as well?

Steps if you DO want to get accepted this cycle:

1) Take your DAT early (i.e. Mid-May, or NOW)
2) Apply early (i.e. June 1, or the first half of June)
3) Be available if/when schools want to interview you
4) Vacation out of the country AFTER you have been accepted somewhere, like next summer

You have plenty of time to study for your DAT. With you GPA, it's apparent that you are intelligent, you can study for 4 weeks and do very well. And yes, get your application in ASAP.

I would start the application process while you study for the DAT. You could finish in June sometime (the app), then take your DAT in July sometime. Why? Well, by the time your GPA is verified and the application is mailed and ready for review (July or August) your DAT can be sitting on their desk. There is no reason to rush it. No committee is going to review a DAT score in June when they don't have an app until July. This advice was given to me by an adcom. Good Luck!

-Why is the end of June the latest to take the DAT?

-Would an applicant still be considered early if they took the DAT at the end of June but had already submitted his/her application on the first week?

-If an application is already submitted and the person takes the DAT at the end of June, wouldn't it make it in time for one of the first 1-3 mailings?
I talked to someone at ADEA AADSAS and was told that they don't start mailing out application until mid July...

Timing is huge. Think of it this way: If you take your DAT the end of June, that means your score is processed 2-3 weeks after that, which means at the very earliest, your application is ready to be processed in mid-July. Although it might not seem that late, you have already given thousands of students with stats just as competitive as yours a 6-week head start. Taking the DAT any later only increases your disadvantage, because they won't consider your application until it is complete.

What admissions commitees look at is the overall package: they want dental students that are well-rounded. Your GPA is great, and assuming you follow that up with a solid DAT, then you will make the "cut." After that, schools look at the rest of your application and decide if you're someone they want to interview.

Okay before this goes outta hand and everyone throws their 2-cents about whats early and whats late...

FROGGBUSTER KNOW that schools aren't dying to interview you. A school will send you an invitation for interview (out of the thousands of applications), if you call back "Oh sorry, Im outta the country for 2-3 months".... they will either tell you:
-"we can't reschedule sorry, apply again next year".... or
-"well... call us back in 2-3 months and we'll see if we can reschedule you"...or
-"use our automated system and see if you can find a spot 2-3 months from now"

Either case = doesn't look too promising.... Hence, you shouldn't apply this year IF your stuff isn't going to be ready till Late August / Early September.

However, you SHOULD apply this year if you were going to get all your stuff in by June / July (this included DAT take). In order to be successful, you need to land as many interviews between the August - December period (before vacation), to do this, you need to be an early applicant. Late August / Early September is not early anymore

why not just apply early, get accepted dec 1st, THEN go rock out in another country a few months before dschool starts

Alright, things I've decided to do:

1. Not go out of the country, lol. I didn't know better, I thought we could just reschedule with schools and it wouldn't make a difference. Guess not.

2. Submit my application ASAP (mid-June at the latest).

3. I'm taking my DAT in late July/early August. I feel I'm going to need until then to do well. I'd rather take an extra month or so studying for it and getting the score I want rather than rushing to send my application away. The basis for my decision was this thread: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=8320301

Apparently, adcoms have said August is NOT too late to take the DAT.

Thanks for the tips, you guys definitely helped. 🙂

You really could reschedule your DAT to be early July or late June and you would have plenty of time to study. It doesn't take 2 months to go through all the material. You will already know most of it since you did well in your courses, but if it makes you more comfortable to push it off til later, then that is your choice.

I agree. Get it done sooner. Just because you submit your application in June does NOT mean that your application is complete. By taking the DAT in July/August, your applicatoon will be complete in mid to late August. You're still in the same position that you were at the beginning of this thread, except that you have partially come to your senses and decided not to travel out of the country during interview season.
