I messed up in calculus. I got an F, retook it and got a D. Every other class i did great in, im a sophomorore and my gpa is now 3.27 after a full year of ~3.75 GPA. Im going to take an upper level math class now b/c i cant retake the calculus class I got the D in.

Any thoughts? Other than do great in it obviously. Like do i have a reason to be really worried about what dental school interviewers might think about this? Even if i do good in my upper level maths.

Also, when would be a good time to take my DAT, and how much is a good amount of time to have to study for the DAT. I just finished my sophomore year, have 56.5 credits, il have 64.5 by the middle of next month though.

I took BIO 1,2 CHM 1,2 Physics 1, will finish physics by the end of the year, and taking Organic chem all of next year.

Guess the question was not so quick, but atleast it got peoples attention =D sorry ppl didnt mean to mislead you.

Btw, im a new member, looking forward to seeing all of you around the forums, and in dental school!

dental schools have a reputation of looking at average more often than individual grades. If your overall and science-GPA are in order, you have nothing to worry about.

the only problem with the F & D in calculus is it drags down your GPAs, as far as schools caring.... I doubt it. There are only like 3 or 4 schools that require calculus (so you have to retake and earn minimum of C) for those schools.

question: why are you planning to take upper level math courses? IMO, upper level biologies are far more important ESPECIALLY if you do well. Besides (not trying to sound judgmental) but if you struggled with Calculus you will struggle with upper level math (DFeQ, linear algebra, numberical analysis, number theory, etc). You gotta be careful with your sGPA, all math counts towards the sGPA.

Well, the most ideal time to take the DAT is whenever you finish pre-reqs (its not always the rule ~ but its a good guide line). So you said you'll finish both orgo series next year right? Right after that, you'll have a summer session, thats when you should take the DAT

Someone correct me if i am wrong..but this is what i found.

BU

  • Advanced Placement credits will be accepted if the degree granting institution awarded college credit toward the bachelor's degree.
  • At least one calculus course is required.
  • A statistics course will fulfill the second mathematics course requirement.
UPENN:
One semester of mathematics — calculus is preferred.

Schools that DONT require calc:
-Temple
- NYU
- Tufts
- Maryland
-PITT
- Columbia
- USC
- Case Western
- NOVA
- UMDNJ
- Buffalo
- VCU
- UCONN
- Michigan

You have 2 options:

1) Retake CALC at a different college ( dont take an upper level math if it is not required and if you did horrific on intro calc 2 times in a row).

2) Dont take math(calc) at all, since its only required at a small amount of schools

I think harvard also requires calc

Well i basically have no math class with over a C average. Im not bad at math, at all, i just took it freshman year and really didnt want to bother with it. My Freshman year gpa was ~ 2.69, sophomore gpa was ~3.75, i think if i took it now i would do really good in it, i just cant retake the same calculus class.

Besides, dental schools want to see that you are good at math, so i need to prove myself, the way i see it right?

My major is BIO/Chem, only 3 classes of which will be chemistry, so ill be taking 5 upper level BIO classes. So far im doing really well in my science classes.

By taking upper level math courses ill be like proving to dental schools that i just slacked my freshman year, and am more than good at math.

P.s. Stony Brook is actually my goal lol, but that'll be a fight to get into. Which is why i want to start by beating calculus.

Thanks for the really helpful responses guys.

im in the same situ as u..did great in everything, just messed up 1 class..dont take the upper div math..just find easy sci classes and inflate

what possible advantage does math give you in dental school? none whatsoever

If you want to prove yourself, keep your GPA and sGPA high (you seem to be doing well now), take upper level bios (most important if you ask me) ~ biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, genetics, immunology, pharmacology, anatomy, histology, etc etc. these are the kind of courses you'll encounter in first year Dental school, doing well in them in undergrad demonstrates the potential that you might be able to also handle the heavy dental curriculum
