Hey all,

A quick question regarding ABA board requirements. My transitional year program has us do 3 months in the ICU as part of our rotation schedule for the year, but I was looking over the ABA requirements the other day, and they state that we are only allowed to do 2 ICU months over the course of our intern year. Am I going to run into a problem with this down the road? Or does my 3rd ICU month just count as a generic inpatient medicine month? Anyone else run into this same situation? Thanks ahead of time.

From my understanding you can only count 2 of your intern ICU months as ICU months towards your anesthesia residency requirements. But someone else may know the official rules better.

That's right. It's not like the third month doesn't count, it just doesn't count toward your 4 required for anesthesia.

Also, had this question earlier. Like the others have said. Only 2 will count, however you can do more as an elective essentially.

And it does not mean that the 2 or 3 ICU months you do as an intern are going to count towards what your anesthesia program says you have to do. You may meet the ABA/ACGME program requirements but your program may still need to give you additional ICU months just to complete coverage
