We're all waiting now, if you're a current applicant. I've developed ways to distract myself -- many of them are good, productive things. I've also found that a few of them are pretty not productive. Thought we could share our habits we've picked up since "The Wait" began.

1. Checking SDN compulsively
2. Cleaning my room, then finding myself making it messy again intentionally, then cleaning it again
3. Taking my dog out 8.4 times more than I normally do to have an excuse to go to the mailbox -- even though I won't hear from anybody until later this month with Ohio (if I get an interview)
4. Crafts. I'm making little stethoscopes out of whatever scraps are near me, then promptly destroying them (they're a jinx, duh -- see below).
5. I've picked up oddly superstitious behavior -- I won't buy shirts that say anything about vet school, because DUH THEY'RE A JINX.
6. More superstition -- referring to everything in the future in a super-cautious conditional. "If I maybe get into vet school, and it's maybe at my number one, I would possibly think about living here, but only if I could possibly maybe live with these people. Hypothetically, of course." A lot of wood has been knocked on.
7. Pinterest.
8. Having the same conversations running down our chances with my other current applicant friends. When one gets bored of listening to me ramble, I just switch.
9. Discussing how unhealthy this fixation is, and how I should just leave it until I hear something, then continuing to fidget until I keep doing everything I just promised myself I wouldn't.
10. Taking pictures of my dog in funny positions. Then laughing to myself about them because everyone else is sick of being around me (see 8).
11. I've picked up like 3 different TV shows. (Thank goodness for American Horror Story)

These are hilarious and I can so relate! I have embraced #5- a friend bought me a tshirt from the vet med school that is my #1 choice, and at first I thought it would jinx me by wearing it....then I thought, well, maybe by wearing it and putting positive thoughts out into the universe, it will come true! How is that for quirky!!!😉😛

I'm going with, "take on WAY more hours at the emergency clinic". Time becomes a weird entity when you don't really sleep. And it'll help me out if I end up needing to reapply.

I am the same for #6! I have bought vet school merchandise (I told myself it's not a jinx if people have shirts for places they don't have any affiliation with) but I now insert so many "if"s and "maybe"s into my sentences that I'm sure no one can even follow what I'm saying.

I feel your superstitious pain!! I moved back in with my parents about a year and a half ago to save money. All of the stuff from my apartment has been lingering in my basement, waiting for me to go through it and organize it...and I've been putting it off thinking it's bad juju to organize it without knowing where I'll be next year (if anywhere). I've since decided that is crazy and started to go through it, but can't shake the feeling it's a bad omen!!

I am trying to immerse myself in the school work that I have been putting off this semester and checking SDN more than normal to see if anyone has had any updates.

I have been grinding my teeth at night, not sure if it is the stress from knowing this are starting to occur in the admissions process or school or both. I am pretty sure it is both, because that is how I roll 🙂

Yeah, this is what I've been doing. The teeth grinding too.

I have been keeping super busy! Let's see... I have become super shelter volunteer. I have lunches planned with everyone. I am knitting a cabled afghan, a hooded scarf, AND a sweater. I decided to go gluten-free (so I can obsess over something other than applications). I haven't gone on a cleaning spree yet, but that's definitely coming soon. I'm catching up on TV. I'm reading two books....

And the superstition thing? Willagirl, I'm there with ya! I'm also doing the "positive" thing 😛 Although, I still have a hard time saying "when" instead of "if" even though everyone corrects me LOL

Eta: Ditto on the teeth grinding 🙁

I check SDN constantly. Too much. I know when interview invites for my school are supposed to go out (not until late December), yet I still log on to see if maybe...just maybe things will be different this year and my heart skips a little beat each time someone posts in the Interview Invites thread. Dumb paranoia. :bag:

I sleep with a bite guard at night, otherwise, I would chew my tongue off from grinding so much. 😡

ChittyBang, I LOVE your avatar. Pitties rock!

Refreshing SDN constantly
Watching too much TV
Working out 6 days a week with Insanity and Bar Method to keep myself sane.

That was me too. And email. I'm surprised my heart didn't give out from all the time it skipped a beat upon hearing my phone making the new e-mail ding noise.

Refreshing SDN...
Working over-time at work..
Painting my nails every other day...
Getting migraines...
Constantly refreshing email... and checking my emails when I wake up in the middle of the night..
I think I'm going to take my crochet needles out of storage and start makin' stuff!

lol what insanity videos are you doing.... I am doing those too, but I feel like I wouldn't be able to do it 6 days a week.... I'm working my way up......3 days a week:banghead:

I'm doing the videos according to the workout calendar. Tomorrow's my last workout for Month 1. I'm weird, I actually crave the workouts. I actually have to force myself to take a rest day lol.

thats awesome! i wish I craved working out... I do it cause I have to not cause I want to haha

Yea.... day drinking.. playing with my cat.. great temporary distractions.. I also want a puppy really bad now.

I know the feeling!! There is nothing like an emergency C-section at 3:00 am in the morning to get your day started before Biochemistry at 9:00 am. 🙂

New obsession, y'all. Water marbling manicures. I've just spent the past hour carefully designing nail polish swirls in a cup of water. I love the results. I have 45+ nail polishes...so many possibilities!

I just googled this and found a youtube video tutorial. This is so cool! First time I've heard of it. I know what I'll be doing for my next polish change 😀

It's a lot of fun, but also frustrating, haha. I didn't tape my fingers which was a mistake. I used to put Vaseline on them when I first started marbling, but my jar of it never made the move. 🙁 Since it's your first time, I'd really recommend using polishes that aren't rare/expensive/retired because you can end up using a bunch of it. Also, room temperature, filtered water works the best. And I've found that metallic and matte-type polishes don't dissipate well in the water, so marbling can be difficult because the color doesn't come out well or it clumps up when you try and make a design. But, the real fun lies in experimentation! I'll try to post my results once I get my fingers all cleaned up. 🙂

I have probably 100+ nail polishes but I WAY too lazy to attempt this. At this point, I'm too lazy for any of it and have been getting shellac put on at the salon. It lasts three weeks.

I loved getting shellac put on when I worked at the clinic. With all the hand-washing and other rough treatment, it was the only way to make nail polish last. My favorite was the color-changing gel. I had so much fun playing with my nails, haha. They can do some really cool stuff when two colors are layered too.

Damn, I love doing/getting my nails done.

You get 3 weeks out of your shellac? I'm jealous. When I get it it barely lasts the promised two weeks. I guess I'm hard on my nails and they're just too thin and bendy to keep it from cracking.

I have thin wimpy nails, too. That's one of the reasons why I like it - it keeps them stronger and helps keep them from bending or breaking. I do usually get three weeks. I think the big reasons why it lasts are a: the nail place does a good job and keep the layers of polish from touching the cuticles, b: I keep my nails a bit shorter than I would otherwise, and filed round instead of square, and c: I don't pick at it. No chewing and no picking. It's a hard and fast rule made easier by that $30 bill I lay down to get it done.

(yes, that was a vague Storage Wars jab, if anyone got it)

School has been keeping me quite busy for the most part thankfully. If I scrape up some free time I have been using it to watch episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender, House, and MasterChef Junior. I'm slightly afraid to subscribe to Netflix, I think all of my productivity would go out the door if I did that. 😛

Here be my marbling results. I didn't have any set pattern this time around, so each nail is different and they're a little messier than I would have liked. Black and grey were Essie and the blue was OPI. I painted a white base so the colors would show up better.

I'd just like to say that I'm thoroughly impressed by this.

Holy crap! That is amazing!

Gosh. 🙈 Thanks, everyone! It really is a lot of fun, but can take some practice (and possible bouts of cursing the first few times). If anyone else does it, I'd love to see the results! 🙂 I'm going to try rainbow gradient with black marbling overlay for a very Lisa Frank-look on my next go around.

+1 for picking up extra emergency shifts!! Assisted with a p/u surgery for the first time tonight- that kept my mind off of vet school for a little bit!!

ETA: that is some awesome nail artwork!!

Seriously think I'm going to break gmail with the number of times I refresh my e-mail an hour. I need to take up knitting or something...

I am stalking the admissions offices at the 5 schools I applied to. I read every note they post, I read multiple forums, I check my e-mail every 5 minutes. This is more frustrating than waiting for the original college acceptance letters out of high school. I actually have to take my phone and turn it off for a couple of days at a time to get away from it. I have gotten better over time realizing not every day is new information though, which has helped. Good luck to everyone!

Do it! Knitting is very relaxing. My personal favorite is buying yarn in different color schemes and seeing how it turns out for various projects - here is a headband I finished up this summer:

I wear one too. Sadly, it doesn't get any better once you actually get into vet school. I've had a killer headache for the past two days because I was grinding my teeth while studying without even realizing it. 🙄

Nice! Are those yarn overs?

I definitely agree about knitting/crocheting. Not only does it keep you busy and burns off nervous energy, but it strengthens your hands and makes them more dexterous 😉

They are! It's a combo of those and slip slip knit (if I remember correctly!).

I figured there might have been some slips too. We should start a knitting thread and spare everyone our shenanigans 😊
In other news, my cleaning frenzy has begun...

I think there's something wrong with me... every time I've tried knitting I get frustrated and lose patience and then quit :meh:
