I'm an american graduate who quit his advanced position as a pgy-2 in a neurology program for personal reasons. I'm thinking of contacting the IM program where I did my internal medicine intern year if they have an opening. Any suggestions on how I could go about this? Also complicating matters, an attending at the medicine program (the person I would likely contact) wrote a LOR for me during my PGY-2 to transfer into another specialty (not IM). Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated, and any ridicule would be taken in stride. thanks

What do you have to lose by contacting the IM program? I would expect most programs would prefer to take back someone they have already worked with who performed well, especially if the reason you are changing is just a change of heart about the specialty.
Good luck with finding the right place for you.

Agree with above. It seems there isn't much to lose @this point. I think if that fails, you also should sign up for sites like Findaresident, because likely there will be occasional PGY2 medicine spots that open up. Also, there are other things you can do with an IM intern year under your belt (preventive medicine residency, etc.).

I think it was probably a mistake to quit your other residency mid-year...I personally never quit a job until I have another one lined up. Also, you don't want to burn any bridges @your neuro program, just in case you have to get a letter of evaluation later. But I'm not ridiculing you...good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Yes - you have nothing to loose. You will not be there first person who transferred out to realize that they want to go back. I agree that they would rather take a known-entity than a total outsider.
