Quitting a Lab Without Burning Bridges?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just be honest. Set up a meeting with your PI and say that you don't feel the lab is a good fit for you, but that you appreciate the opportunity and experience. I would definitely start looking for more opportunities in your area of interest. And absolutely mention this experience to future research prospects! Just because it wasn't your cup of tea doesn't mean you didn't learn anything.

No point in doing something you don't like. That will only make you unhappy.

You are taking research for credit. Once the semester's over and you have your grade, give thanks to your PI for the opportunity and tell him that you have other commitments to make.

How you could you upset him if you think he doesn't like you? PI's have more important things to do than to worry about undergrads - I've irritated and annoyed my PI so many times due to failing experiments but mistakes make you stronger. Don't expect the best of LORs from him if you quit before you apply for medical school but I'm sure he would write you one.

Handle the situation in a diplomatic but firm manner. You can do it.

Agree 100% This is the professional way to go about moving on to a different opportunity.
