What are the consequences of quitting? Say I apply to my state schools(where I would have a better chance to get in than at most other schools) very early, I would hear about the decision before the end of December. If I am rejected, I can forget it. And if I am accepted, what's the point in continuing the SMP program?

most schools want you to finish the SMP (or any other grad programs you are in) if you start them.

I honestly think its not about just getting into medical school. I think it shows integrity and discipline if you finished what you started doing. I guess its more about character than what is most convenient.

I obviously haven't got any acceptance letters. But do any schools write you "you are accepted on condition that you finish your current grad school program"?

lol, I am not worried about my character. I would rather not spend the extra $20k for a semester to take the courses that I would have to repeat the following year. I would rather go on a long vacation.

If you get an acceptance for the following year while in an SMP, ask the school that accepted you if they want you to continue the program. If they say yes, you have to stay. If they say no, enjoy your vacation.

Well, make sure when you do become admitted that you ask the admission office about this. A long vacation sounds like a good idea =)

Why do you have to ask the school about it? I mean if the acceptance letter doesnt say that you have to maintain some gpa or you have to complete some program, then they are obligated to honor the "contract". Besides, wouldn't it look even worse if instead of quitting your SMP program you just got straight C's? Or will they rescind your offer of admissions if you get C's?

What % of currently accepted smp students have quit or are thinking about quitting their program?

From my understanding, the acceptance are conditional. When you submitted an application, you indicated you were in a program and the length of the program before completion. I think the medical schools can argue the fact that they admitted you based on what you have written down. If you discontinued a program without notifying the admission office, they may rescind your acceptance on that basis. I believe all schools also request for a final transcript before you are officially admitted. Keep that in mind.

Thank you. I wonder if anybody here has experience telling med schools that you quit your smp program and getting in response "good for you. have a nice vacation".

Again, this isn't complicated. If this comes up, ask the school what they want you to do. Once your accepted you're allowed to call and ask as many questions as you want. They'll either tell you you can quit, or they'll tell you to stay and to make sure you'll pass. You can't get a blanket answer covering all schools from an internet forum.
