Quoning a patient

So, has anyone here quoned a difficult patient in the past? How was it done?

After some searching I found this:

I can only assume it's what you're talking about. But since the definition is really vague I'm still not sure exactly what it means.

Oh, it is exceptionally vague.

I'm taking it from Seinfeld, where Jerry's mom used the word "quone" in a scrabble game. Kramer defined it as a medical term: "when a patient gets difficult, you quone them"

Now, as for what quoning actually is, I'm not sure. In my experience, it involves security and/or police.

I kind of want to introduce quoning into the vernacular.

Well, if by "when a patient gets difficult" you mean that they are threatening the staff with violence while spewing racial slurs it 1st depends on if you're a trauma patient. If you have a concerning mechanism, then it's RSI and a pan-scan. If you're not, then where I used to work I would've given you Geodon, but I use Haldol now since Geodon's not stocked in my new ED. I know some fans of Droperidol, but I think they might just like reading lots of ECG's. If there's no perceived threat of violence, I'll try Ativan and see how it works. I like to avoid physically restraining patients whenever possible, but you need to protect yourself, the patient, and the staff so it can sometimes be unavoidable.

But I always try verbal de-escalation first... except when you spit in someone face while we're taking care of you. Do that & even though I've never heard of it before -you're getting "quoned".

That's badass, dude... Although I just tell them that they've been flat-out pwned. No need for a medical version of such a perfect word.

Had a manic patient (like, textbook manic) in the ED, talking about how she's a federal judge and studying for the bar (although not in law school), who got 20mg of Geodon IM. What did that do? Slowed down her speech - that's all. No sleep, no grogginess, no clearing of her sensorium.

Who quoned whom there?
