My only sibling is currently a heroin addict, prostitute and felon. I had to deal with her issues through my high school years, but fortunately was able to detach. I will be applying to med school soon and I don't plan to discuss my sis. However, I worry that I might be asked about my relationship with her in interviews. If I am, I'm not sure how I should handle it. I wouldn't want to be evasive but I would not feel comfortable discussing it because people vary greatly in their views about the "right" way to deal with addicted friends/family.
If you don't disclose this in your application (via an essay / personal statement), it's not going to come up. If you do talk about it in your app, it's fair game. You might get asked a vague question like "What was one of your greatest challenges and how did you overcome it?", and you should decide in advance whether this topic is what you want to discuss.
