I know how to designate priority numbers and I also know that R needs to be rotating clockwise whereas S is counterclockwise. But, I'm having trouble positioning the molecule in my head so that I can correctly name a chiral carbon R or S. Do we make sure priority number 4 is facing the front or back?

lowest priority is in the back for R to be clockwise and S to be CCW. Yes that's for chiral carbon only, N can't be chiral.

EK had a good blurb about this in one of their answers, I believe it was that if the lowest priority was on the left or right side versus the back, use the same prioritization rules but switch the order (R versus S)
