Did a search but came up with a million threads about racism.😱 For the AMCAS primary, I am going to put "declined to respond" for the race box b/c frankly I don't fit any of the descriptions: I'm not "white," "asian," or "black," and I don't belong to a "tribe." If you consider yourself to be "brown" and are of mexican (native) descent, do you get a chance to fill in your race on secondaries? Or will schools use my ethnicity information?

Does it not give you the option for other or multi? That's what I normally put down (I'm Puerto Rican, Dominican, and white) and I put Hispanic/Latino

Well to be honest I haven't been able to log into my application account in over a week so I can't be sure of what the choices are. But from what I remember there was no way to put "other," only "declined to respond." Hopefully secondaries from schools have better options for me.

I've started filling out some secondaries and (this may vary by school) I don't recall coming across any space yet dealing with race/ethnicity.

I think it you consider yourself brown as opposed to white or asian, then you would be considered black. For example, latinos that appear white would be considered white, but of Hispanic ethnicity--they wouldn't put down that they're asian or black.

For the AMCAS primary, I put "declined to respond" because I honestly don't think that race should be part of the selection criteria. They can always look at my picture if they want to know my race. I am white so I don't have the best perspective on racism, but if we truly believe in equality then why do we still ask this question.

they have a box for race (black, white - non hispanic, white- hispanic, etc) and a box for ethnicity (AA, Puerto Rican, caucasian, etc).

Unfortunately, they do NOT have a multi option (which makes no sense) so i had to kind of mix & match. I chose Puerto Rican for my ethnicity & black for my race.

As far as including race in the selection criteria, I think subconsciously it already is so it doesn't matter if you state it clearly or not. The sad truth is everyone has stereotypes and pre-judgments before I even walk into a room so why should I pretend to believe in equality? Trust me, you should have heard some of my interview questions

Yeah same here, I didn't feel comfortable putting either since I clearly don't look "white" or "black." I left the race box blank though it probably looks weird to have "declined to respond" but oh well.😕

I think the whole race thing is stupid but to put into perspective. I don't believe it matters what you put on the application for race unless you are of African decent. Whether you are mixed, multi racial if you have any features that would give you away as having African decent or if you are "passable" for something other than African decent,if the issue is racism and he/she finds out you have the African gene in your makeup you are still a "N" in there mind. I am bi-racial, and passable but heard others crack jokes about African Americans and were surprised to find out that I was essentially bi-racial. Historically even "white or non-African decent" Latinos of variety of cultures and languages have never been told not to drink out of the "whites only" fountain or restaurants. Only people of African decent who are or were known with African decent was dis-allowed of these basic rights. "Blacks" in this country have always had it worst then anyone, even the ones who try to strive for a higher education to improve ones livelihood. I think the term "Minority" is a mis-used and abused word in this country by others who want to compare there sufferings to that of the African American. Its a joke really. People say "well we have a black president, that proves that racism does not exist". BS, it does exist, but no more lynchings or violence, now its used as a tool to keep African Americans to advance in careers in most cases. Look at the AMA, they publicly forwarded a letter back in July of 2008 acknowledging and apologizing for the major discrimination that African Americans had to go through in medical school and various residency programs in this country but, they are doing absolutely doing nothing about it. Read it if you don't believe me(Home page of this website). Did not mention Latinos or Asians or anyone else for that matter, just African Americans. The data shows it. Like our attorney general said earlier is that "we are a nation of cowards". (meaning racism practice behind closed doors). If you are a Latino with obvious African features or are known to have African decent you are still the "N" word in a racist persons mind irregardless.
African Americans should get payed off for 400 years of hardship, murder, rape and slavery in this country. I mean look at Jewish people, they got payed off by the billions from Germany because of what a small group of thugs led by a devil decided to do to them tragically. Point is where is the African Americans payoff for all the suffering??? At least we should be able to scale up like everyone else if nothing else. The word "Minority" has many meanings but it does not always equal racism, except when you have African decent. But of course you would have a difficult time truly conceptualizing that if you have never been in the same shoes.

My brother, URM isn't about reparations. Although I agree with you on the reparations front, I think you are underestimating the racism towards people other than "African descent", cause to a racist mind, it's not just blacks they hate...but that's besides the point. I think you are just ranting, but I accept it 👍

P.S. Don't forget that American Indians/Native Americans have had it almost as bad as Blacks in this country...remember how they were turned into slaves...and then just got completely wiped out...from 100% of the country to less than 1%, yeah I'd say they had it pretty bad. And as a Latino I've dealt with more than my fair share of racism...what we need to do is unite, not divide according to how dark or light you are. I love my Puerto Rican side whether they are as black as some of my cousins or white as some of my others...

I hear you on that. Reparation is not a reality in this country but equally should and always be one. My question is this, what ever happen to the black/latino-Jewish coalition? How did that all fall apart?
Thanks for the feedback bro.

Put your race on the applications and be proud of it! This is one of the only times when your race may benefit you in this racialized country. I agree with some of the other posts saying that the Jewish have been compensated for their struggle, the asian american got compensation for the concentration camps/forced labor during WW2, why can't other minorities benefit this one time. Its the least the establishment can do--they've gotten way more money out of us than we've gotten out of them.

Check out my blog also in my signature. I think you will enjoy it!
