Practical advice:
If you are a European or Asian American, concentrate more on applying to Medical Schools in either California, Arizona, Michigan, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Washington, Nebraska or Connecticut. These states have recently banned this legalized racism known as Affirmative Action.

Now we have to wait for the Supreme Court ruling of Fisher v. University of Texas which will come out sometime this year and hopefully will ban this nation wide.

That is all.

Diversity is of utmost importance. I don't feel comfortable learning and practicing medicine with colleagues who all have the same skin color. It's important to be surrounded with people of all different races. As a patient, I want to be treated by a team of doctors of all skin colors. Don't be racist.

This is something that we really don't talk about at our school, but among our smallest group of friends we've kinda noticed that most of the minorities...seem to be, well, buffering our curve, shall we say.

Someone once told me (an attending) that one of the driving reasons for AA in medical schools is so people that are from very disadvantaged areas will return to those areas and serve that population after residency. But realistically, not a lot of people would want to go ~back~ to that once they've had a taste for a much better life. I'm almost sure AA isn't exactly going the way med schools are hoping it goes.

I don't exactly need to be surrounded by mega mansions, but I'd personally not want to live in/serve a low income area the rest of my life. I can't blame minorities for wanting the same.

Sorry if that doesn't sound very altruistic but lets be real here. 99% of the people you know aren't going to end up in rural areas. IMO it takes someone REALLY driven to ~serve~ to do that, and I'm basically just driven to ~learn~. Related but different motivations.

Protip: we're already in medical school. We don't care about your premed minority hating mindset.

So.

Whew...thank goodness for those white kids buffering the curve for the Asians.

Yeah, has nothing to do with "hating minorities." It should be a non-issue. We had to deal with this bull**** in the fire service. I could care less what color your skin is as long as you can handle the job (e.g., drag my ass out of a burning building if something goes wrong inside).

We had a set pass rate of 70% for our civil service exam, plus you had to pass a physical agility test. The DOJ actually stepped-in and forced us to lower our pass thresholds (both exams) for minorities because we didn't have enough of them.

The other part to add to this is there is no face-to-face interview, or any subjective means to disqualify applicants. A list is generated based off performance on both exams and we go right down the list and stop when we fill a rookie class.

Political Correctness over all else. Such a shame.

That only applies to public schools. Private schools can have any admissions policy they want.

Guess I should re-phrase that to not enough were passing the tests.

No I understood it completely. It's just so shocking you have to laugh sometimes that the solution to the problem is "make it easier, dumb it down." How can you not at least chuckle at that?

In all fairness there are brilliant black physicians who are among the leaders of their respective fields. I kinda feel sorry for them though. I know my friend told me about a black physician he was working with who hated affirmative action because people generalize and think he's not a boss, and he is. This is just too much though. If you go down the list of decreasing MCAT and grades, the % don't even change that much for blacks. 3.2 GPA and 24 MCat, 65% get in? What!

The OP is being very misleading. There are Historically Black Medical Schools and a disproportionate amount go to those schools. I bet there are only 1-2 black students in each class at most medical schools, so I don't know why people are making a big stink about it. If you didn't get into the medical school you wanted, it's not because of affirmative action.

We've been over this before...keep this crap out of the allo forums. Go rage with all the pre-meds about URMs but this doesn't pertain to the allo forum in any way. There's a thread with this exact table every week over there.

Not to mention, pretty sure this is a flame thread anyway considering the OP has a whole 4 posts and joined a week ago..

While I agree that diversity is important, how is it racist by posting this?! Man our generation is so overly sensitive to ****.

Honestly im so torn on this topic. On one hand we definitely need diversity, to serve a diverse population... no doubt. It makes us better physicians to work and learn alongside people from other races.

However, to a degree the seats in med school should be going to those who are the most qualified based on grades, MCAT, volunteering, and personality. But apparently, this would lead to med school classes not representative of our population sooo i dunno i give up.

Maybe im just jealous because i dont fell into either of those two minority groups with lower admissions stats. I'm pretty sure if I did, I would be taking full advantage of it too

Oh and as someone else mentioned, falling into either of those groups doesn't mean you cant compete and arent capable of high stats because those stats are irrelevant of skiin color and more about hard work, intelligence etc

There are black medical schools? For real? I didn't know that lol. Are there any hispanic medical schools?

Yes, they were created because back during the 1960s, we had this thing called segregation, the effects of which we haven't fully recovered from.

I have never liked the insinuation that people should only want to see doctors of their own race. In most doctor appointments nothing pertaining to race will even come up.

I don't think diversity helps to the point where you have to force the issue to make your class that way especially by sacrificing standards. It's just one of those things. There is an issue there. Black peeps who are not as well off definitely are at a disadvantage throughout their life, and I wish that everyone had the same opportunities/resources all the way through. But I don't like cutting medical school standards as a solution. It's kind of like bandaiding the very last step and saying hey! problem solved.

Still there are black individuals who are great at what they do. I did research with a black dude in my class right now for 2 years when we were in undergrad. He's gonna be a great doc and he's a great friend so I don't want people thinking I hate black people or anything lol. I just see those stats. 24 mcat, 3.2 gpa, 65% get accepted? Is that MD only? I'd advise someone not to even bother applying with that.

I googled for 5 seconds and couldn't find them. Can you link them here instead of being a smart ass?

Pretty sure patients pick doctors of their own race because they can understand them better (i.e. they speak Spanish, Chinese, etc.)

It's true. Howard and Morehouse are two that come to mind.

So if a white person said that they will only see white doctors, you think most people would be okay with that?

Yup... that's how real life works

White people generally hate going to IMG indians & pakis who can barely speak intelligible engrish

I wonder how that breaks down by family income. Diversity may have some very real benefits but if most of this diversity is based on race and ignores economic background, can we really call this diversity? That said, I think only about 15% of my class is non caucasian/asian. So even on the racial issue, we're not that diverse.

whine whine whine whine whine... I don't hear Asian people complaining about whites taking their spots.
Plus you gotta look at the total number even with those 90% accept rates, less than 5% of all medical students are black anyways. So chances are if you are a good enough applicant, you don't have to worry about them. just deal with it, it is what it is.

With these threads recently, i feel like sdn is turning into stormfront (white supremacist, Neo Nazi forum)

MOD please ban these

lol, we have like 3-4 AA in our class. How does that buffer the curve?

I think I read that around 3% of doctors are black.

Yeah, this gets old.

Since this is allo, I'd rather see some Step 1 scores or things like that. At least make it pertinent to this forum.

Since I like to watch you guys argue...

Re: University of Maryland School of Medicine
• More than a quarter of the black enrollees (7 out of 27) failed "Step 1" of the medical licensing exam on their first try. Two whites, one Hispanic, and no Asians failed. The median Step 1 score for black enrollees was roughly the same as that for Hispanics, but lower than that for 75 percent of Asian and white enrollees.

• About a quarter of the black enrollees (4 out of 15) taking "Step 2" of the medical licensing exam failed it on their first try. No student from another group failed.

You guys are right.

Black people are dumb and shouldn't be allowed to be doctors.

Thanks for your contribution, keep up the good work.👍

That's what you got out of his posting? Great analytical thinking skills. :sarcasm:

What did you get out of it?

That taking students with questionable stats has consequences. It's a report from University of Maryland; do you think they are a bunch of racists? The PC crowd tries to take over the conversation in America by being loud and constantly crying. Too bad it works so much of the time. 😡

That's basically what I said. This thread is about black people with bad stats getting in - they can't pass tests because they aren't smart enough - they shouldn't be doctors. That's what this thread is saying. Saying there are consequences or this is data doesn't really make a conclusion. What's the conclusion? Basically, only good stats should get in - black people have bad stats - they shouldn't be doctors.

Tryouts for the Power Rangers. Doesn't matter how much skills you got or how much Zordon loves you, There's gotta be equal distribution of 1/5 Black ranger, 1/5 Asian ranger, 1/5 female ranger, 1/5 Caucasian ranger, and 1/5 Hispanic ranger.

You said black people, not black people with poor performance in undergrad. You are a common liberal who tries to end any conversation of race by making out people to be racists if they aren't all in for affirmative action. It's a pathetic tactic.

I hope you're being sarcastic. You know that doesn't apply to all of us, right?
