Hi folks,

1stly, wow! great forum! This is certainly very useful - no doubt about it.

Well, knowing how competitive Rad Onc has been for the past 7 or so years, I was wondering if anyone could give tips on what would be the ideal time frame to send in applications to secure interview spots, what sort of questions are asked during rad onc interviews & the dos and don'ts during the interviews =)

much appreciate it! thanks!

without question: AS SOON AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE.

Let me restate that. SEND THEM IN THE MOMENT ERAS OPENS.

I cannot overstate the advantage to getting your application in early. Regardless of what any program tells you, dont be fooled; slots are set aside for interview the moment an interesting app comes along. Thus if you apply late in the game, you've less spots available and you have to look that much better. Ive seen people with weaker profiles do far better sheerly based upon early application. You cant go wrong.

The dos and donts are common sence stuff. Look interested, interesting and be honest. Dont try to be smart and stab other applicants in the back. We can tell when youre doing it and we dont like it. Also dont be arrogent. We dont like that either. Dont say youre interested in big bucks and great hours. Everyone likes those things but we dont like people who want to do this for those reasons.
And it shows poor judgement to say so so you should avoidit on that count too.

Youll be asked "Why radonc" and about features in your application. Each place will be different but those are usual things. If youre pimped, push that program low on your list for you'll be in for years of misery if you match there. Any place that pimps a med student on how to treat is malignant.

Could someone please clue me in on what "malignant" means? Obviously I know it is bad, but I can't quite get my finger on the exact defintions.

BTW, thanks for the advice Steph. You may want to include it in the FAQ!

Its just what it sounds like. Someplace that is unpleasant to be around. the specifics can always vary but in general its a place where folks are mean and make you life unpleasant, often with the excuse that this sort of way of doing things is the only way you'll learn. Malignant places think youre a naughty, naughty boy who can't do anything right unless they give you "tough love". They opt to forget that youre an adult who has opted for the responsible life of a doctor.

Hi all,

Was checking out the Tracking System and noticed none of my materials were downloaded by Oregon since September... anyone else in the same boat? Should we snail mail?

Sorry Uxbridge, I didn't apply to Oregon. But have you heard of anything from either Univ of Michigan or Mount Sinai... The tracking system shows they haven't downloaded any of mine either.

Thanks

Ditto on U Michigan and Oregon. When I called Mt. Sinai a few months ago, they said that they were not accepting applications this year.

Didn't apply to U Mich but re: Mt Sinai, they aren't participating this time around, although they are in this year's ERAS. Weird.

Sloan and Penn are the only 2 programs which still haven't downloaded my Dean's letter. Anyone else in the same boat?
