This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
…I’d rather lick sandpaper than talk to most radoncs….outside the great folks on sdn
SDN is where people come to talk about RadOnc on their own time, voluntarily, for no incentive.

This confuses and enrages The Establishment. Why would we do something where we can't swing our pedigree around, or put it on our CV, or get honoraria?

Is it because we actually enjoy Radiation Oncology and talking with people? No no, it's just magical thinking from misanthropes.

Someone want to share with the class?

Telling that ROHub gets most posts on an issue that allows virtue signalling on both sides. A great example of wasting time on an issue when ASTRO decides and signs contracts for the Annual Meeting years (maybe decades) in advance.

For those that are not members the thread was started by a member who wondered whether ASTRO should boycott San Antonio given the Dobbs ruling and Texas's stance on abortion.

It would be suicidal for ASTRO to pull the meeting; especially given the low attendance of the last two years. BTW San Antonio proper is a blue area in a red state.

As much as I disagree with Supreme Court, wouldn’t be in favor of pulling conferences paid for in advance. It’s like defund the police in response to a shooting. In fact, I would guess that those most vocal on boycotts are precisely advocating wokeness and “anti-racism” that turn off large groups of voters.

Radiation Oncology Anticipates More Payment Cuts Going into 2023

This evening, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule for 2023, with policy changes that would reduce payments for radiation oncology services by approximately 4% next year. This reduction is due to the expiration of the 3% increase associated with Protecting Medicare and American Farmers from Sequester Cuts Act, as well as the Medicare and CHIP Reauthorization Act statutory required update of 0%, and a budget neutrality adjustment of 1.55%. Additionally, 2023 marks the second year of the four-year phase in of the Clinical Labor Price update which lowers payments to specialties that use expensive equipment, such as radiation oncology, in the budget neutral environment for practice expense. ASTRO will provide members with a summary and detailed analysis of the proposal in coming days and will submit comments to the Agency later this summer.

All is well folks! See you beautiful people at the BLs!

Phenomenal environment for all those 150+ residents to graduate into in a few years...

Inflation doing great for therapists, dosimetrists and physicists salaries! Not so much for the RO centers/ROs though

That 4% is across all specialties, so I'm hopeful there will be a legislative fix as was done with the "Protecting Medicare and American Farmers from Sequester Cuts Act"

It is rumored you will fail oral boards if you don't order a pregnancy test on a woman of childbearing age prior to recommending radiation therapy or other testing involving radiation.
I would guess this would be something where most examiners would lead you to getting a pregnancy test.
“Are you sure you wouldn’t want to test ANYTHING ELSE in this YOUNG woman before irradiating her abdomen??”

They aren’t looking to fail people… and will usually do it only on an issue they feel may indicate incomplete training on something critical. I hear it’s actually quite a bit of work to fail someone

Its funny seeing the attempts on twitter to make san antonio happen. Totally boring uninteresting city. Clearly many agree. I never miss ASTRO but hard to get excited about this one. I hope we do not have it there ever again.

I deliberately miss ASTRO. But I do pay attention when ASCO is in town.

You don't like having a number of dining options by the open sewer system? Your pic makes me think that's up your alley.

Why is it in SA so often? Any inside knowledge, @Chartreuse Wombat ?

If that's viable, then so should NOLA, Phoenix, Atlanta and many other possibilities. Take Chicago in October off permanently, wtf.
Nola would be badass. What a town. Of course, the refresher is there. Probably good to keep that in Nola as suicidality would clearly skyrocket with refresher + San Antonio

Need to bring back San Diego

no brainer.

i know their costs are much higher in SD, but the increased attendance will more than make up for it. sure its farther away, but after pandemic years, multiple SA years, multiple chicago in october years - people will flock to San Diego, especially thee folks that only go to ASTRO every 3-5 years or so

Never heard abt pregnancy clearance being asked on the boards?
It's mostly a boogieman, like knowing how to draw 3D fields for cervix Ca or being asked about LDR dosing for gyn brachy in 202x.

Mostly depends on how much your examiner wants to a be a dick (or even remembered to be a dick - remember that examiners are human as well)

But yes, I do mention to residents to mention it, and that if you get pushed on it during oral boards you should know that you should at least offer to test pregnancy status on a female of potential child bearing age who does not have a medical reason to be unable to have children (post-hysterectomy, s/p tubal ligation, etc.)

Last Astro I went to was in SA. If you are few years out of residency and not active in research/"academics" is there even much of a point in going to Astro?
When I was in training, new practice changing studies cane out at every Astro. contouring seminars were needed for both residents and attendings. Almost everything you learned was from books and the Astro educational sessions. Mednet, econtour, huge number of online resources has made Astro much less relevant for teaching.

Given its declining importance, I don’t see why it can’t be held at a Hampton in Scranton.

I asked the same question after NRG/RTOG and others so frequently in SA.

Paraphrasing

San Antonio is cheap relative to those cities and is the right size so that ASTRO is "the only game in town" when they come to town.

In other words ASTRO doesn't want to "compete" with the concrete manufacturer, investment bankers, CISCO, etc which larger venues could handle simultaneously (Vegas, Orlando, etc).

If i were king for a king for a day I would rotate between San Diego and Boston. Walkable cities with convenient airports but they are simply too expensive. the vendors don't want to pay $400-500 a night for their people.

You not super off although sewer water is a bit too much for me. I’d have to be very drunk for this but not shutting the door. A good mudpit to bask in the sun? We in business honey!

My issue with San Antonio isn't just that it's an uninteresting place to have a conference, there are not a lot of flight options so it's hard to get in and out of. Houston and Dallas are also boring places to have conferences but at least there are lots of direct flights.

this is a very good point. i don't really do places domestically that i can't do in a non stop.

Haven't been in over a decade. But national level conferences should always be in fun places. Conferences are by definition a little bit BS. Good work can be presented in so many ways and even interviews can be remote if need be nowadays. It's more of a cultural event than anything.

So....it should always be in Miami, Boston, Chicago, SD or NO. Maybe just always in Miami.

Hamptons breakfast is pretty darn good. Get to make your own waffles!
Please tell me this is a joke. American hotel breakfasts are an abomination, especially Hampton inn breakfasts. I can't even imagine what the Europeans think when they come over and are given rehydrated powdered eggs then dehydrated back to sandpaper consistency, comically small yogurt cups, severely reprocessed hog anus, and a gaggle of unattended children fighting over the waffle maker.

No NE or Midwest in October
Some of us live in trash climates

🤣🤣🤣
I have only had breakfast a couple of times in American hotels and rather not in expensive ones, but there's certainly some "room for improvement".

Miami was finally going to happen after umpteen years until covid... Hopefully again
