You have to do those 4 weeks either at home or away on a normal 4 yr grad schedule
if one chooses to do 4 week away rotation then 99.9% time it is self funded (still pay rent at home & at new place, etc)
Good marketing by UCSD for when students making decision to do aways (in addition to location)
Utility of doing any away rotation at this point though is separate Q entirely

This is much better for students especially ones who need to do away rotations for their field or just wanna go somewhere different (ex. East coast to west coast so need to establish connections). Usually these are targeted at URM/Low SES students which is great. A lot of “top” institutions in expensive areas have these such as UCSF ($2000), UCSD it appears, Stanford ($2000 PLUS free housing), Mayo Clinic ($2500), Penn, NYC hospitals, etc.
If one were doing a specialty where they have to do 2-3 away rotations (I find this system stupid btw) this could save a student ~4-8k as they don’t have to find expensive short term housing, have some money to pay for food, and in the case of free housing have enough money to pay for rent in their normal apt if they don’t sublet.

Dropped 15k easily not including interview expenses. For a URM with no money is this quite hard to do, basically more debt vs doing another specialty. The silly away rotation requirement is just another poll tax in this good ole boy country club specialty.

There are some really cool smart, personable people in our field. There is also plenty of like people on spectrum and like total weirdos. idk if it is like that in other fields, but the concentration of weird people in our field felt higher than average at times
Summary of Rad Onc leadership
I've always thought about it as the people in Radiation Oncology are no different than any other type of doctor or specialty, but the "problem" with us is how small we are. When you only have ~5000 total RadOncs in America, certain personalities and problems can REALLY get amplified.
The small size is just one of the reasons we could use more of a visible hand guiding the job market...especially since our gigs are tied to linear accelerators which are regulated by most state governments.
But maybe that's just crazy "magical thinking" by some anonymous misanthrope, eh?

Path is the same, also hospital based with heavy regulation. Compounding this is the dichotomy that is academics. It represents our field and while it contains the very best of pathology (researchers, people who write the books and drive the practice) it also has the very worst who can’t cut it in the real world (no examples needed).
From the spreadsheet. Adds a little more color to Tyler Seibert claims that getting good jobs in California isn't really an issue for nice residents graduating from nice programs.
"I interviewed at 2 private practices in California (bay area and LA). One was offering a sub-300k starting salary and at meaningless "partnership" (they were very proud of calling it partnership but it was not like a partnership anywhere else) in 2-3 years the pay was dollars per professional wRVU at ~10th percentile. The senior partners made technical and salaries are likely high 6 figures. Everyone they're hiring now they tell to expect 60 hours a week and $450k/year max. The other practice was also hiring sub-300k, had a 5 year partnership track, and would not discuss any details of what that partnership looked like. Rumor is that nobody has made partner there in a long time and it's a churn and burn practice. Neither practice would pay any interview expenses, more like let's talk on phone/Zoom and if you happen to be in the area we're happy to meet with you and show you around but we have 100 applicants for these jobs so let us know if you really want the position... I went academic outside of California instead.//LOL i think i interviewed at these same places. such garbage tactics. 100% i bet they found someone too, that's the sad part. // Sounds horrendously horrible, says a med student. In bay area sub 300k after tax, you live like someone make 100K in east coast like NC, SC and Florida. Spread the word to friends in all specialties. Everyone who hears about rad onc's major job issues can be someone who rightfully discourages applicants from applying into the current dumpster fire that is the field of rad onc today.

Schadenfreude. The field is officially the laughing stock and many somewhat love it.
As far as I can tell, it's basically geared ONLY towards URM students graduating from med school. I haven't dug much into who organized it but I think it was some of the bigger MedTwitter accounts. The only thing I've seen is someone got LIT UP for basically saying they were poor too but white so they wished they could participate but understood why they couldn't.
