Hey all,

I'm a first year resident, holding on until I start Rad Onc next year. I was wondering if there is any data or studies that look at neurocognitive effects of radiation therapy after the patient had a stroke. Does the presence of a new CVA complicate radiation therapy?

Thanks

we dont like to give rt after a stroke and the more time that elaspes from the event better.. essentially healing isnt as good. any brain that has small vessel damage is at risk for damage, rt raises this risk. Which is why though its often the "young healthy" people we likke to keep wbrt away from, its the older folks who develop more cognitive difficulties down the line (barring children). but you pick your poisons. if a pt has a rapidly progressive toumor or the tumor is causing a stroke, sometimes you have to treat to get at the underlying cause.
