Hi everyone,

I am a German trained radiologist and board certified ín Germany.
I intend to get into a fellowship program in the US. So my questions are:

1. What are my chances to get a fellowship position as foreign trained radiologist with no strong research background?

2. Do I need to make the USMLE Step I, II and III to aplly for a fellowship program?

3. Which fellowship programs ( Neurorad., Abd. Imaging, Thor. Imaging, VIR etc.) are the most and which are the least competitive (especially for a foreign trained radiologist)?

4. How long does it require to be eligible for licensure?#

5. Which states is most IMG friendly with issuing unrestricted medical licensure after one has completed fellowship successfully?

6. Are there any possibilities to increase the chance to get into a fellowship program for a foreign trained radiologist?

Any helpful replies are highly appreciated!!
Thanks a lot,

Marcus

Dude, I hardly know anything about what you're asking, but I will say that:

MSK/Neuro are more competitive

Peds/Mammogram are less competitive

IR isn't too competitive, but some people say it's getting more popular. All in all, many radiology fellowships go unfilled every year, and rads fellowships in general are NOT competitive for US trained residents; I don't really know how hard it is for foreign radiologists to snatch up those fellowships that go unfilled every year.

My advice is to choose one radiology fellowship program & ask them if you have any sort of chance of matching there w/ your credentials. Then you can get some sort of real idea of how hard it is. I would stay away from very prestigious hospitals b/c they probably have no problem filling w/ exceptional American radiologists.

Take my answers with a grain of salt. I have not gone through that path.

Hi everyone,
1. What are my chances to get a fellowship position as foreign trained radiologist with no strong research background?

Fairly good.

2. Do I need to make the USMLE Step I, II and III to aplly for a fellowship program?

Yes. Some programs might take you without Step 3, but generaly speaking, you need them all.

4. How long does it require to be eligible for licensure?

It depends on the state. Most states will let you have the license after 2 years of training. You can visit the FSMB's website for more info on individual states.

6. Are there any possibilities to increase the chance to get into a fellowship program for a foreign trained radiologist?

Research, may be. However, as far as I know, you can get in very easily and probably don't need to work on your CV.

I guess what you are interested in the alternate pathway. This pathway is about to die due to multiple issues, but you may have a window period of another 2-3 yrs. though. Contact individual programs. IR and pedi are the relatively easier fellowships to get into. You need to be ECFMG certified. step III is needed for H1 visa.

It is absoletely must to take USMLE and become ECFMG certified. If your ECFMG certified it will take 2 years of acgme training to become eligible for state license. Some other states will require 3 years.

American board of radiology is from a few boards that will consider you for board certification if you are in a academic radiology position as either resident, clinical fellow or assistant professor for 4 year in the same institution. I have made online research and found out that many foreign radiologist would apply for fellowship and be accepted, stay after graduation as faculty in the same institution.

I can't really answer what chances you have though. If I were you I would probably take USMLE first, then trynto contact programs.

For board eligibility, an intern year (e.g preliminary medicine/transitional year) is also required I suppose.
That too before start of 4 year fellowship.

You are not eligible for alternate pathway for board eligiblity.
They clearly mention that from India, only MD/DNB accepted.

Don't know whether you can do fellowhsip or not.

Found it on website http://www.theabr.org/ic-img-dr

An international medical graduate (IMG) is defined as an individual trained in a Diagnostic Radiology program outside the U.S., its territories, or Canada.
As an IMG, you must demonstrate the following to be considered as a candidate for certification by the American Board of Radiology:

  • You have satisfied the training requirements of a non-U.S., non-Canadian country.
  • You have documentation verifying your ability to practice radiology independently in your country of training or have received board certification in your country (if applicable).
  • You have had one year of clinical training.
  • If you have trained in India, you must have the following degrees to be eligible for the alternate pathway: M.B.B.S. + D.N.B. and/or M.D. If you have another set of degrees from India, a sponsoring department agreement (SDA) must have been received by the ABR by 12/31/2011 for you to be eligible for this pathway. Holders of other degrees from India will not be eligible for ABR certification via the alternate pathway.
