I'm asking on behalf of my cousin, a US citizen IMG who grew up in England. How can she navigate through the ocean of radiology programs and choose which ones to apply to? I mean, just as I applied to a wide range of medical schools vaguely based on MCAT/GPA averages, is there some similar sort of 'selectivity' list for radiology programs? She doesn't mind going anywhere in the country -- her true passion is radiology. I know FREIDA exists, but I don't think it says anything about how competitive individual programs are.

She's still abroad now (and licensed there), but will come to America soon to finish her Step 2. She's thinking of applying to medicine or transitional year programs, and then applying again next fall... thoughts?

Thanks for the help.

As an IMG, she has to think of every program, no matter how geographically undesirable, as selective. Radiology is one of the most competitive fields in medicine and the match will not be an easy proposition for her. Advise her to apply broadly, invest the money in the application fees, take every interview she can get, aim to rank AT LEAST 10 programs, be persistent when she is declined for interviews, and most importantly, if radiology is truly her passion, don't give up.

It may be wise to apply to them all.

count on that english accent - she'll seem ten times smarter than the average applicant. unless she's from yorkshire

I can imagine there are hundreds of radiology residency programs across the nation and yes, all of them are selective. That's why I'm trying to pare down the list to remove places like MSK, Mayo, MGH, etc. etc. -- how can I find out which programs are considered the least selective in the nation?

I would go to the FREIDA website and take a look at all radiology residency programs. Go through one-by-one eliminating those residencies at universities (tend to be more competitive). Then, go to websites of the community programs and take a look at the rosters of current and past residents. See what medical schools they went to and, more importantly, if they are FMG. This should help you winnow the list down to 20 or so programs to send your ERAS app to.

Naaah, apply to a lot of programs. How about every community program in the US? It's very hard to get in as an IMG right now. You might want to wait a few years--it seems to be cooling off somewhat.
