M1 looking to do summer research - interested in IR. Haven't necessarily ruled out uro, but IR seems more appealing to me at this *early, i know* point in time

Couldn't get an IR gig, but have the option between a prolific Uro researcher or a DR researcher. Better to go for 1. seemingly better shot at productive research with urologist, or 2. investigate my personal interest in IR by being around the department + start building relationships there?

That being said, would the fact that its DR, not IR, research balance the playing field between my two options and make them equal? In other words, considering that the independent IR pathway will be rolled out approx. the time I graduate, would the field of research I actually end up doing be kind of negligible, since neither are IR and the pathway will no longer DR -> IR?

Do the Urology research. I thought I was going to do urology before I switched to Radiology. I mostly had Uro research and while I was asked about my commitment, I had productive research. Also certain aspects of urology is quite similar to IR and you could always spin it to a radiology angle.

Most places care more that you did meaningful research rather that what field you did it in. No field (except maybe derm or nsg) really expects you to be 100% from day 1 and PDs know that people change their minds.

Definitely go with the guy who can actually get you published (Uro). If you're interested in IR I would honestly walk straight up to the nicest IR attending at your institution, introduce yourself, and ask how you can make yourself more known around the Department. Confidence and drive goes miles in medicine.
