On picking a medical school .....

say there are 2 medical schools in question. A has a better research reputation than B, but B puts more people into radiology residencies. In this case, does it matter much which you pick (assuming you're going into radiology)?

On research....

If you're a radiologist-wannabe who has a strong interest in research, and you were going to get a PhD along with the MD, what areas would be the typical areas to get your PhD in?

(yes, i know one's interests change over the span of medical school, and i might not end up wanting to be a radiologist, etc. etc.)

Go to the one that will cost you less. Do well on your boards and make good grades and you'll get a great spot. Go to a Top 10 school and suck it up on boards and it won't matter. Just look at where some of the residents at many of the top places come from, it's all over the place. If it's the difference between $200k in debt vs. $50k in debt, it should be a no-brainer.

how much does the interview matter? Say you go to a great school and have below avg. boards. If you get a few interviews due to your school, and you end up being COOL as $#@!, can that get you in?

I guess the problem with answering this is philosophical. There's no way to measure it, but we know it exists. And we know that radiologists are generally cool people who like to be around other relaxed, cool, good, hard working people. In order to disseminate advice we encounter a problem. It's similar when we go to meetings and they tell you, "Don't mess around, always be respectful, don't let your guard down." Well, everyone hears that but for some people, they just either a) don't get it b) have poor affect c) socially just don't act in a way that makes others feel trusting and comfortable.

I think you know what I'm saying. I'd be anxious to see what the response is.
Cheers,

GS

I know a Chairman in SoCal that looks favorably for a person to have an ivy league education on their CV. We may not like it. However, top ten radiology programs do consider the "name of the medical school". With that said, a 260+ Step 1, MD/Phd, and radiology research can help you overcome some (not completely) of the namebrand bias. Keep in mind, chairmen of the top programs like to brag about the caliber of their residents i.e. my residents are from Yale, Harvard, UPenn, Stanford etc.
