rampant speculation of chairs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
steph, any word on who the new chairman/woman might be? thanks!

i heard kian ang, wally curran, and the chair at u.chicago have all interviewed for the job...

that's interesting about Ang and Weichselbaum, both would bring a biology focus to a program that might very much benefit it.

I heard Ang through the grapevine but thats probably not worth anything. Other places with potential chair changes UCSF (Roach v. Harari), Colombia (rumors of Minsky but no longer), Chicago (maybe?).

Awesome list, wish I could add something more to it... I didn't realize that Anderson is also looking for a chair. If that's the case, I would think that Ang would likely stay on there.

I thought Ang had taken the Chair position at Austin...? That was the rumor when I did my away rotation there a few months ago, but maybe that's mistaken.

Anderson interviewed 5 for the chairmanship. I think Buchholz was the internal candidate, not Ang. The others off the top of my head...Kinsella, Pollock. Can't remember the others.

Given the depth of talent in the field, it's extraordinary how few names are thrown around for chairmanships... A very small group compete for the same positions--sound familiar? : )

Wondering if we should start a dedicated thread since the subject of this one isn't helpful - the list of programs looking for chairs is excellent and should be an ongoing debate here. . . Steph? 🙂

kiddies you forget: not everyone is offered the chair position who seems like the heir apparenty, and sometimes the deals are not what one side wants. a big name program may get someone in the door but what makes most people good chair-material is an eye for the more important bits down underneath.

what is the word at u of chicago? this is news to me...

As for MDACC, Buchholz is THE internal candidate. Crane has essentially taken over as program director...

Regine interviewed at MDACC but withdrew himself from consideration.

Ang to MSKCC is what I heard this past summer.

Nothing like "hot-stove" rad-onc!

also som of you are incorrectly speculating about new "chairs"- some of these postions are for clinical directors, not chairs.

what do you think weichselbaum's posting fee would be if he were japanese?

in the case of this analogy, it refers to the amount of money that an American baseball team would have to pay a Japanese baseball team to gain exclusive negotiating rights for a Japanese player (in case you missed it, Japan's "national treasure" has joined the Red Sox).

This appears to be the case for MDA. Dr Cox will remain in the chair position for a few years. What MDA is recruiting now is a clinical director - reason that some of their candicates lost interest...

MDACC radiation oncology is so massive that they have the division of radiation oncology of which Jim Cox is/= "Head of the Division". Within the division, there is a clinical radiation oncology department, a physicis department, and an experimental radiation oncology department. Tom B. is currently the clinical director within the radiation oncology department and Jim Cox is the chair of that department(in addition to division head). It is that position for which the candidates have been considered. With over 50 attendings and all of the clinical and research activities, it is fair to say that this is more of a "chairman" job than any other around. So, the titles are just that, but the position has a bit of substance to it given the landscape at the institution.
