I'm a cyclist who started traing for a marathon three weeks ago. Has anyone ran and or trained for a marathon while in dental school. I'm guessing it will be hard to get the workouts in, but my long runs are on the weekend, and for the most part (when school starts) I plan on getting up early and going for runs.

you're a cyclist and you call yourself a man?

j/k buddy, I am sure if running is important to you, you will be able to somehow fit it in your schedule

When I was visiting Buffalo, I met one fourth year student who was about to run a marathon. She said that training was not a problem for her. I think its all a matter of priorities and running was something that she made a point to do.

I plan to keep running and working out through dental school. I get miserable if I don't!

Good luck with the marathon! Which one are you running?

Dental school is not that bad!!! You can surely find the time to do all of that and go to school as well! Working, you will have the time to do it, but why? Just take loans and enjoy life a bit!!!!!!!! 🙂

I just ran my first marathon in mid-June. I'd say I clocked in about 15-17 hours a week for 18 weeks for the training. On top of training, I work 40+ hours a week, was studying for the DAT for 3 of those months, traveled, participated in other sports such as skiing, and spent the evenings at home with my doggie Scooter. 😉 The biggest time constraint was saving time in my busy schedule to make 3 healthy meals. You will find that you can't train without the proper foods. Your body will quit on you. I can see myself continue running (running to the extreme, as my friends put it) in dental school. It's all about good time management and giving up Friday and Saturday nights for something that is important to you.

On a related note, I have a friend at Yale Med (2nd year) who has competed in 3 marathons while a medical student and this summer is doing a triathalon.

I prefer 1/2 marathons. The beginner and intermediate training plans usually run no more than 6-8 weeks and your longest "long run" is 12 miles. Most beginners can finish that in about 2 hours. Your weekly runs are usually 6 miles or less. The key is to set up your weekly runs early in the morning. Get them done, eat a healthy breakfast and get your day going. You'd be suprised how much more energy you have the rest of the day after a good morning workout!

I ran a marathon the first semester of my masters program. Like you say, the long runs can be scheduled for the weekend. You'll find the time no problem. Since your a cyclist, have you thought of doing triathlons or biathlons? I have done several (tri's)and really enjoy them. The training is much more enjoyable for me because of the variety of workouts. What marathon are you going to do? Good luck!

P.S. Vive le Lance!!! Le maillot jaune n'est que pour toi! 🙂
