random draft question

just curious - if the health workers draft is put into effect, what rank do physicians get drafted into?

Here's a website I found about this. I just found and am reading through it... so I apologize in advance if it doesn't have the answer you wanted.

Edit: Well I just read it. Sorry it didn't have the answer to your question...

O3 to 04. Doubt any would get O-5

I've known several physicians who joined after residency and being in private practice. One joined as as 05 one was 06. I have never seen anyone less than O5. This means that for people like me who have been in and around the military since 1996 the draft would put people who dont want to be in the military and who have no military experience as my commanders... That is even more depressing. But I juess it doesnt matter because if we get to that point it will be WWIII anyway.

There was a guy in my OIS class this summer that was in his late 40's and had been a practicing physician for 20+ years and they started him out as an O4. They told him that they had to start him out at that rank not because of his knowledge as a DR but because of his lack of military experience so I find it hard to believe they would start anyone out as an O5 or O6. Unless of course they had prior military experience.

Personal experience....I've seen O-5's...many...

I know of one O-6....coming from civilian side.

I personally would not come in with less than O-6....but then I guess it would not be my choice.

We had a board-certified surgeon, with no prior military experience, at OBC this summer wearing light colonel rank. I wonder if she's learned how to salute yet....

I dont know but my flight commander is a civ trained pediatrician and then anesthesiologist - now he is an o5

At USUHS there was a radiologist who was O^ straight from the CIV world with no prior exp.. He did not know how to wear his uniform. You may find it hard to believe, but it has happened. I guess your person had a good recruiter or he was in a specialty that they didnt need as much. I dont know how they figure out what rank to give who

So at what officer rank does military life not suck for a physician?

I have to believe it matters more what and where your job is rather that what your rank is.

admin probably is the way to go. You do not want to be responsible for patient care and have absolutley no say on anything going on.

Agree with Island Doc, NONE, IF you are going to be taking care of patients. At first you may be able to rule, but it would catch up to you soon. No amount of rank can make things happen when those things do not exist.

But I also agree, if they drag me back kicking and screaming, (actually the way my honorable discharge went, I don't think they can) it would have to be as a made man, no less than Tony Soprano, 0-6.

Yes, and be sure to schedule your lobotomy prior to your EAD.

If EAD and ETS and similar TLAs cause AGE, take a WAG on how FUBAR you will be when you are made the FNG CO of a MEDGROUP where IEDs cause KIAs ASAP. HTH. AMFYOYO.

You get a bravo zulu and a left-handed salute for that, sir! And it would certainly be BOHICA.
