I know your kind! 😛 Always freakin' out in the lab worrying about losing a point or two. If you enjoy it for what it was, you would've liked it ALL! Our lab group talked about anything but orgo when we were in there. We ended up talking about Aqua Teen a lot and singing Salute Your Shorts song.
I liked the class, the lab was just a waste of time sometimes.

ochem lab was hell at my school

Well, we had a lab final exam (30% of our grade), a lab report, grade based on purity of products, pre-lab booklets, etc. Definitely a lot of hoops to jump through to get a good grade, but I was interested a lot in it so it didn't seem bad. Gen Chem I lab was worse, bleh. We were on a very strict schedule.

I should also add that my TA was a post-grad orgo chemist. She was very cool and always willing to help. She explained everything perfectly. She came in to replace our old TA who wasn't as good and she left because of a family member death.

Heck yea! One of the very few classes in college where I actually learned something!

I learned that synthetic experiment 112 absolutely does not work, even after 7 attempts.

Our class loved to give us experiments that were impossible to carry through.

I can't remember exactly what we had to make. I know we had to make benzocaine once (too 4 labs of 4 hours each). We did chromatography once, but I wasn't there (appendicitis). A few things like unknowns with the Tollens Reagent. We got to use H NMR spectrostuff. We did something with dyes. Pretty cool for us. 😎

I just read that it did bad at the box office.
well, it was the #1 movie this weekend but barely. it didnt do as good as the studio was hoping for after all the internet hype but COME ON, a few months ago they had begged samuel jackson to let them change the title to something like "Pacific air flight 55" or something and he refused. they stuck with "snakes on a plane". in the end they will make more money off this film than they would have otherwise.

I think it will still do well next week. Most people were skeptical but if it gets good press, then it should do well.

yea ours sounds similar to that. For every experiment we had to do HNMR,CNMR, UV, GasSpec, IR, .....the only problem is, there were only 2 instruments of each type and the class had about 500 kids in it. It was impossible to actually get your stuff done 😡 That class was almost as bad as studying for the mcat

same here!!

we had huge lab classes too--and we all had to wait in line and share---the labs were always really hot--no windows--old. like we had one TA covering 2 labs full of people--there was a fire and he had no idea b/c he was in the other room

Hey A, you think if I start a thread on Creatine in pre-allo it will it get moved out of there? I was a good boy and used the lounge, but then I thought that the regulars in the lounge prob wont know much about creatine

Wow, sounds like orgo lab sucked for you guys. We had 6 sections in our lab, each with about 20 students. Each had 2+ weighing scales, melting point apparatus, spectrophotometer. We were right next to the lab window to pick up materials so my group had to wait less if lines built up early! All sections had windows along the entire wall and cubbies on that for our backpacks. Very cold in there, too. We didn't have to to H NMR for everything, but that once time for our last unknown.

People goofed around waaaaaaay too much in orgo lab.

Someone made a huge snowball from water and drying agent 😱
People would but charcoal/boiling chips in peoples experiments.

We weren't graded on yield though so it was all good.

LOL! That so freakin' hilarious! We were graded on color, texture, mass (so % yield), mp, and bp! We would've been f'd if someone did that to us. 😱

i could move it somewhere else for you drkuba but it looks like its gonna get more responses in the lounge, just give it time.

my orgo lab was graded on yield, but it was so easy to fudge the numbers anyway and everyone recorded good yield because of that 😳
😱 😱 😱 😱

yeah, i was a chem major so i now how easy that is. my department didnt grade the students on yield either though because of that. they put more weight into the identification of the unknowns.
