Do any of you know anything about Kia Spectras? I drove one today and I really really like them. I think I'll buy a new hatchback next year before I start med school. I doubt my jeep will make it through med school sadly.

R U serious? A Kia?!?!?

Go with a Honda or Toyota. Even hybrid since you're a hippie.

No idea, but I have to buy a new car before school starts too. We only have one car right now, but when I'm gone all day we are going to need another.

I'm leaning towards the VW Jetta right now, but we'll see.

Trust me: I would totally buy a hybrid if I could afford it, but right now I can afford 10,000 or 11,000 TOPS. Hondas and Toyotas hold their resale value too much for me to afford one but Kias are just as dependable, according to consumer reports, but because they're less "fashionable" then drop more in value - right into my price range

Oxeye: I like VWs too. Very safe for you to ride around with those cuties. 😀

I had a Jetta in high school that I loved. I'd actually want to buy a Passat, but that's just a little too expensive for a second car that won't be driven very much.

It sucks - all the really safe cars are the bigger ones, and they are just out of our price range. 🙁 The Jetta has really good ratings for it size, which is the reason I'm leaning that direction.

Oh, the other thing that sucks about not being able to buy a big car - my husband is 6'2" and he refuses to buy a car if his head is too close to the ceiling. 😉 I don't blame him - but it cuts down on our options a lot. The VW might not even work. I haven't had him sit in one yet.

look at the Kia Amanti too. Good pick up and I'm a big girl and I had plenty of room. Almost too big for my tastes. I like something a bit more sporty.

I just checked it out on edmunds.... WAY out of our price range. 😉

I'm not sure exactly how much we will want to spend yet, but it will definitely be under $20k. MSRP on the Amanta is close to $30k! 😱

I'm sorry 😱 I meant Optima - not Amanti. The Amanti is their luxury car.

Size wize it goes: Rio -> Spectra -> Optima -> Amanti

Kias have HORRIBLE value retention.

I have SERIOUS trouble believing that Kias have even half of the dependability of a Honda or Toyota. Look harder...10-11K can still get you a decent car. As long as it is not a Kia.

You could probably get a very nice 2003-05 Honda civic for your price.
I have a 1994 thats still running strong.

A Honda or Toyota is a good investment. You can easily unload it to a kid for their first car since they look pretty sporty.

In the under 20k category, my top car choices are VW Jetta, Toyota Prius, Saturn Vue or Ion.

We already have a mommy car, so it seems kind of silly to go with a VUE but its safety ratings are amazing and they have a hybrid model now. But we don't really need an SUV. I know my husband prefers a sedan anyway and he will probably be the one driving the second car most of the time.

The Ion is cheap, but not as safe as I'd like. Just a basic car. I like that I could get a brand new one for 12k.

I love the Prius - but also worry about the safety. It's more expensive that other cars its size, but it would probably make up for that in gas pretty quickly.

The Jetta seems like one of the safest of cars its size, but it's also higher in price. 😉

Anyone have any other ideas? Safety is a big thing for me. I'm kind of curious about the new Toyota Yaris too - but edmunds doesn't have safety ratings up for that model yet.

Are toyotas are reliable as hondas? My husband had a Honda Civic in high school that he literally drove until it died. He says it lasted forever - 250k miles. 😱 Much better than his last car. He had a Neon that needed the engine replaced at not much over 100k miles. We just got rid of it at that point.

I always recommend the Honda CR-V... just lived through an ugly wreck in one. I bought it new in 1998 and we had racked up nearly 130K miles on it. NEVER a problem. Built on the Civic chassis, but more space. Hubby drove it when I got the Xterra. Then, he drove it into a couple of poles and it spit some airbags at us. Glad it did too!
