Hey. I was wondering why you all decided to go into dentistry? Is it a calling, want a challenge, like the money/prestige, etc?

I'm graduating undergrad this semester w/ a biz major and think i'm in the wrong field. I'm interested in dental/medicine but i dont have that burning feeling that ive always wanted to be a dentist like many of you seem to have. so im just curious as to what made you all want to get into it? hopefully your respose will help me decide on a career change. thanks.

Man, I am a Business major also. However, I am 24 going on 25 this month. I Shadowed a dentist for 4 months and finally made the decision to go for it. You should try to talk to a dentist, shadow a dentist, and read some more about the profession. If after all this you still think it is what you want to do, go for it.

I don't think you have to love teeth. That would be weird in my mind. But there are certain things I think you must really enjoy to tolerate the aspects that you may not enjoy. Go shadow and check it all out. As time goes by I enjoy more of it and dislike less of it.

I was a business major for 2 years...AWEFUL. Shadow some dentists so you have some drive and reason for putting yourself through the prerequisite courses.

i have a business degree, also... the whole time, i wasn't convinced that business was right for me. and towards the end, i really hated my major. but i was so close to being done, i just finished. i wouldn't say that i regretted it or that it was a waste of time, but things sure would've been easier for me if i decided to look into this sooner!

anyway, i worked for a year full-time but eventually decided to go back to school and just go for it!
i'm working as a dental assistant part-time right now and taking all my pre-reqs. it's a huge change, but i couldn't be happier with my decision.

i agree, definitely shadow a dentist for a little while. 🙂
