Wow, that's actually REALLY pretty. I don't see the creep factor either!

Abandoned theme-park exploring would be so cool, if only it weren't so illegal/prosecutable 😛

I didn't ask him who you were or anything. Just figured you'd be friends and I've seen a pic. 🙂

I was tagged in something, so I appear. What's going on here?

I think they open it for a few days a year to the public.

Well I know who she is now, I got coffee with her yesterday! Willing to negotiate to spill the beans; sushi sounds good.

The other possibility is @alohacat319 is just a shill and works for that scam site. She's spent almost a year pretending to be a pre-vet student building trust, and now is her time to shine. She even said she went to the same school as me, which was a very smart move 😛

Shhhhh. Don't ruin my elaborate ruse. Coffee was just to add to my credibility.

So, my mom just called me with what I think is the freakiest story I have ever heard. I'm not even sure what to say. I should be studying but I had to come on here and talk because, right now, no one believes this.

My mom was on the way to somewhere but traffic was at a standstill on the interstate. She's stopped next to a car with a tiny Chihuahua with it's half its body out the window like some people let their dogs do (I personally do not btw). Well of course someone flies up the road not paying attention and rear ends the car next to my mom. The dog goes flying and lands on my mother's hood. Mom immediately gets out to look at the dog and it is still alive. She brings it up to the lady who is seemingly uninjured. First words out of my mom's mouth were: "stop letting your dog ride like that!". Next words were: "Are you okay?". Lady is fine and seems a bit shaken. She's getting the dog seen about too. I hope it's not too critically injured. If my mom's car had not been at that exact spot, it may have flown into the eastbound lane of the highway, which was clear. Lord. Had me shaking.

😱😱😱
I get really annoyed when I see people letting their dogs hang out the window. If you're in an accident (as happened here), your dog is going flying. Smh.

Dogs in truck beds happens a lot here, which is scary but at least they are bigger dogs and could possibly fare better (maybe).

Dogs on flatbed trucks... yeah, I want to yell at people.

How tacky would it be for me to set up a GoFund Me account and see if I can raise any funds for AAZV/Marvet this year? I don't like the idea doing that sort of thing, but I've also seen it used for things such as music festival tickets or laser tattoo removal. Feel free to tell me it's a bad idea. I wouldn't expect much to come in, anyways.

If any of you know of any grants/scholarships that are specifically for non-school opportunities, send them my way!

I think it's kind of tacky to set up funds for things are essentially 'wants' and not 'needs'. But hey, if people think it's tacky, they don't have to donate. So... fill your boots.

Technically, AAZV is a 'need.' A need for the career I want. So I'm pushing it there, haha. I just know that when I see someone using an account for something completely stupid, I get annoyed. So I don't want to end up doing that to myself. I'll have to think on it.

It's a career you want. Not one you need. So still not a need 😉

Ehhh....just because other people get away with funding really stupid stuff....I guess my pride would prevent me from considering that, but if yours doesn't then have at it, I suppose.

Using GoFundMe for anything but legitimate needs isn't right and you should do everything you can to avoid it IMO.

I explored Dogpatch USA in Arkansas with some friends a couple years ago. 😀 We didn't come across anyone else the entire time we were there, but we were aware that we might get in trouble for trespassing.

Unfortunately it's since been bought out so we can't go back and explore, but I guess the new owner is trying to clean it up and has it open for tours occasionally.

This has been a long week, so I'm probably being overly blunt with my opinion on the subject. But those are my transparent thoughts.
No, honestly that's how I feel too. I'm not going to do it, mostly because I don't like hitting people up for money. I'm just at my wits end here...this whole shoulder thing has kind of ruined my entire year when it didn't have to, because I could be working to cover costs. I haven't found any funding I could apply for that I qualify for since I'm not a presenter at the conference, either. I'm looking at $2500 total this summer before including the hotel/meals for the conference. I just really don't want to miss out on this.

Honestly, you're probably better off going to the school sponsored events (like at mizzou or UT) in terms of networking. It's much smaller, gets you more 1 on 1 time with those in academia and in zoo/aquarium med.

Missing out on this isn't the setback you think it is.

Does your school provide any funding reimbursement opportunities for attending conferences (without presenting)?

It's a career you want. Not one you need. So still not a need 😉
Oh good, someone else thought this too. To me, needs are healthcare, food on the table, roof over your head and maybe a few others. Networking conferences don't count. And I agree that at this point, smaller conferences are probably better. As a first/second year, you probably won't register on most people's radar at this point (as harsh as that sounds).

Not that I've found...so far I've only found externship funding for fourth years.

Well, I actually know a good number of diplomates attending, and I'd like to stay on their radar. I don't think Facebook/LinkedIn is enough to maintain those relationships, personally. And I know it's not a need for my life in general, but it is considered a must for the career I want, which is exactly what I spelled out in my earlier post. I have never not been advised to attend this specific conference as often as I can if I am pursuing a residency in the area. It's really been stressed to me by every single person I've talked to about the career. Maybe missing one won't be the death of my future, but seeing as how I have plans for next summer, and the next-next conference is in Prague....this would be the year to go.

I've been keeping an eye on those as well, but so far they've been at really inopportune times. I missed out on the Wisconsin conference because it was right before our finals. I figured passing first year ranked higher than networking. Hopefully I can get those to work out in the future because I do agree that smaller conferences are just as important.

but it is considered a must for the career I want,
no. it's not a must. That's the point I'm making. Nothing about being in zoo med requires you, as a first year, to go to this conference. Not a darn thing.

And if you know there's a conference around finals, ask your professors if you can take them early or late and explain why. Some will work with you.

Well, there's the whole thing of following the advice of the people who will be reading my residency applications, though.

I think our first year course coordinators are more forgiving, but I've been told that 2nd/3rd year only allows emergency rescheduling. An option worth exploring, though! I'm going to have to find out anyways since my best friend's wedding is currently slated for 2017.

I get that. But you also have to remember you likely won't be applying for a residency for at least 4 if not 5 years (since most zoo vets need 2 internships). So I think you are getting way ahead of yourself. And must is a strong word. It's definitely preferred. But that doesn't mean you won't get it if that's what you decide you absolutely want if you don't go.

True true. I also don't know if I'll be out of a sling/cast/whatever by then either, which is exactly why I haven't forked over the registration fee yet. Just overall crap. I mean I could go, but it'd just make things more difficult.

I noticed recently that a class mate of mine from undergrad set up a GoFund Me account for her externships for 4th year (for traveling and hotel expenses). Wanted $8000...I thought that was pretty tacky and a little embarrassing. I don't think this type of thing is what that website is meant for.

I found a method online to whiten dingy sheets with baking soda and vinegar. It assured me my sheets would come out sparkling white and not smelling lke vinegar. Well, half that statement is true. Luckily it's a very faint vinegar smell...

My poor little rabbit got a penicillin shot yesterday. Baytril just wasn't working on her ear infection. I'm hoping it's not something more serious but we'll just have to wait and see. She also lost too much weight over the last two weeks so now she's going to get Critical Care stuffed down her little rabbit gullet. Hopefully she'll enjoy the apple-banana flavoring. I imagine it has to be more enjoyable than the antibiotic and probiotic she's been taking for the last month.

My bun eats that Apple banana critical care like he eats his pellets! Makes it very convenient when he needs to have it. Good luck!

I don't know what it is about this video, but I just watched it three times.

I've been subscribed to that channel for awhile on YouTube before it exploded and went viral. It's seriously my favorite channel. For me, it's the dude's Finnish accent that sounds like some Bond villain, it cracks me up every time. My favorite is the Barbie doll and his recent one making a fruit salad.

Watch the Barbie doll: "As you see, destruction is quite total." Classic.

I shamelessly binge watch these. These and the dropping red hot nickel balls on things. And I don't get it either, but they're just fascinating. I hope I'm not secretly a destructive maniac.

I just got done watching the latest hydraulic press stuff, and thought to myself "hey, I haven't seen that hot nickel ball channel in a while". The block of cheese is my favorite. So if you are secretly a destructive maniac, I'm right there with you 🙂

Had never watched these before. Just watched like 6 of them. They're oddly satisfying. We enjoyed the lego one because the dog lego escaped unharmed.

My point was that we spend thousands and thousands of dollars on a college education for a 32K salary. Which may support a single person in a low-income area, but things get dicey in larger cities or for people with families. I could go on and on about the ****hole that is college education right now, but y'all would probably get bored halfway through it. Needless to say, if I ever have kids, I will be encouraging them to go to a trade school.

I didn't want to completely derail the other thread, but I totally agree with this and I would take it a step further and say that not all people need/should go to college. My sister started college and dropped out cause she didn't know what she wanted to do and was wasting money. She had a good job making more than me. Even when she left that job, she still doesn't want to go back to school. She found a job at Sprouts making $10/hr to start and if she sticks with it, she could move up with time. So right now, school isn't for her. As long as she is working and contributing to the household, my parents are willing to let her be a "roommate".

Continuation of Nerf War 2016: The target I chased down in heels apparently never joined the game officially. He never went and got a gun or target. Therefore, I need to go to the reshuffle tonight and get a new target. Will update with more info cause I figure there will be a lot of deaths tonight after we all get our new targets.
