If someone wants to buy me fancy sheets for a present, I am totally okay with it. Or pillows. Or anything to do with sleeping, really.

Seriously. I feel like that's just about a perfect present! It's something you'll definitely use but nicer than what you'd get for yourself. A few years ago my parents got me a heated mattress pad that I'd asked for. Best. Present. Ever. It's like sleeping inside a toasted marshmallow, plus I save on energy bills. This year, I think I'm going to ask for fuzzy pajamas.

I'm pretty sure that's what it was called! Yeah it was pretty good- and I'm not a huge Thai fan
Omg, thank you! My wife thanks you, too. Amazing Thai Cuisine is appropriately named. This bowl of Tom Yum is just what I wanted.

Oh my god heated mattress pads are a thing??? I just figured out a Christmas gift...

I love my heated blanket...I need this mattress pad!

😱 That's a thing?

That sounds incredible.

Yeah, I think the issue was that my mom had actually told him things she wanted that he totally ignored, the sheets my dad got were super crappy despite the thread count because he bought them really cheap (they fell apart after like one wash), and my dad basically expected to be showered with praise and congratulations for getting her a birthday gift in the first place. I think with better execution it could have been a thoughtful gift, but it was just a miss all around.

It might be the best thing I own. It can make the bed very warm, but it's not as intensely hot as a heated blanket, if that makes sense. It's like all my sheets just came out of the dryer, but it feels like that all night. Mine is only for a full size bed, but if you get the queen size version, you can heat the two halves of the bed separately!

Ah, that makes perfect sense. Maybe if they'd had unicorns on them...

Should we have a thread for holiday gift ideas?! I only have a few people on my list this year, but I am totally lost.

I would be down for this, I have some other people I know who are hard to shop for as well, plus it's always fun to brainstorm gift ideas!

I could have used this a few weeks ago! Think I finally have most my BF's gifts figured out (Birthday is coming up too,) but I could still use a few more ideas

Is there one that cools one side and heats the other? I think my partner would just die if I made the bed any warmer, he already sleeps half uncovered (I don't understand or condone this).

Yes to gift thread good lordie I've bought *nothing* so far.

I'm going to the Pioneer Woman Mercantile tomorrow and getting stuff for sister, mom, and my boss's wife (which he will reimburse me for). And maybe something for me too. Finally something neat and unique to OK...

I'll probably eat there too 'cause duh.

My mom's has separate controls for each side the bed, so she can have hers on and dad's off.

I got to sleep with an electric blanket last Christmas when we were at my sister's wedding. It was fantastic.

My mom claimed it even though I had dibs. :yeahright: (Sister moved to the south and didn't need it there, so it was up for grabs) My mother already has a heated mattress pad and her own heated blanket . . . But she needed this one, too, because of course. 🙄

Heated mattress pad is on my wish list too!

I need at least a leg out to properly thermoregulate

My wife may actually like this heated mattress pad thing. This is her first real winter, and I dont know how she'll hold up.

vet head, I may be your mom. 😛 That list is really pretty close to what I have given my children in the past....that, and hints that I wanted a mother's ring. or bracelet. or necklace. or charms for my bracelet. nada. nothing. zip. from said children (there are 4 adults).....so......I got a tattoo of a unicorn, with flowers by his feet. the flowers are the colors of their birth months.

So, you could get your hard to by for mom a unicorn tattoo!!
I just ordered my mom a mother's necklace from etsy. She's impossible to buy for and I have no idea if she will like it or not. I almost thought she'd prefer it with her grandkids, but I didn't want to do that since there is technically still a chance of more grandkids, so I went with just her kids (me, my brother & sister). Fingers crossed that she likes it.

I think I'll apply for the Banfield SJP (honestly, I just need money).
I've thought about doing that since it would get one of my required mentorships out of the way (it's kinda weird, we have to complete three 40 hour mentorships in SA, food animal and "other" before 4th year, in order to learn some clinical skills), but I'm hesitant about making a 6-week commitment, and I would need to find housing since the closest participating hospitals are two hours from here. Has anyone on here done it/have feedback on their experience?

Over winter break I'm going to try to line up a mentorship or two for the summer , but other than that I'll just be giving tours since I'm a CVM ambassador, lounging at the pool, and making frequent trips home to see my boyfriend. 😍

I am not enjoying this, but I am, but I'm stressed out. Why.

I want this one character to die. If that could be arranged . . .

Usually has something representing each child; birthstone, initials, etc. Put it into etsy and you'll get oodles of examples.

Aw, neat. I think my mom would wear one of the birthstone ones.

Also interested in hearing others experiences!

I've been thinking about applying, too. I would love to go work at my old clinic, but they know I'm interested in working breaks and they haven't offered, so I don't know if that will actually be an option.

I'd make so much more money doing the SJP than if I worked all summer at my old clinic, so that's a plus. I've just heard so many conflicting things about Banfields. I'm going to see if I can talk to a friend who knows a vet at one of the ones near the sites I'd be applying for to see how those ones are to work at.

Plus I'd have to live with my parents and I don't know if they'd be okay with me crashing their house with two cats and two rabbits all summer

I worked at Banfield for a year and a half before vet school, and I honestly loved it. Yeah there are some annoying corporate things you have to deal with, but overall I had a fantastic experience and will be working there again over my breaks. I may even apply for the student job program to go back to my old hospital over the summer. Pay was well above any of the other hospitals around me, it was very hands on, and I had amazing coworkers. I see why some people would be nervous about their big company attitude, but I never found it to be a problem. I think a big thing that makes it or breaks it though is your coworkers and veterinarians. If they are awful to work with, it will obviously be way less enjoyable.

I'm applying to see if I can land a job back at my old hospital, because I just love my coworkers. I do have issues with the attitude upper management has about things sometimes, and the corporate brainwashing, but that's just corporations for you. They still do good work, and they do have some policies that I really like and respect.

The reason I would only take it if it's back at my old hospital though is that the job is basically vet assistant, which I've done and I'm not interested in doing again if it's not with my people - would rather spend the time doing something I haven't done before. And I'm nervous about ending up at a hospital that doesn't have a great team, because their model does lead to a fair bit of stress and I'm not up for dealing with that in a poorly functioning team.

I did the SJP for 6 weeks during my summer break and I was actually shocked how much I enjoyed it (was doing it mainly for the money). I worked with two great doctors and a really supportive team of techs. No one was above doing anything, even the doctors, so there was always someone you could rely on for help. There were days that were absolutely crazy packed, but it made time fly by, so it wasn't too bad. I wasn't always a fan of my schedule as it was never the same from week to week, so it made planning things difficult and I never got two days off in a row, which was a bit frustrating, but likely not all that uncommon in the real world. I gained a lot of experience placing catheters, intubating, working with difficult patients, prepping for surgeries, assisting in surgeries, interpreting bloodwork, and so on. Overall, I think it's worth doing if you don't have anything lined up already. The pay is fair, plus there's some pretty nifty benefits. I had a few friends who did not have the same great experience as me, but I think it all depends with where you're placed, as well as your attitude. I believe they likely try to put students in the clinics where the doctors are happy to teach and that business is good and such. I'm sure Banfield would like to make a good impression since this is ultimately a recruiting tactic.

Thanks, @epivetlove !

I'm going to try to talk to my old boss over break about Summer, and if it's not definite I'll be able to work there I'll be applying!

Starting to get a little concerned I won't be able to go home this weekend. There is another winter storm advisersy and the pass is already awful and expected to get worse. I'm comfortable driving in the snow, but there have already been multiple accidents from people being stupid and I don't want to be in that position with a car full of animals. Ugh.

I was going to ask if there's a bus you can take, but you probably can't bring animals. 🙁

There probably is, but like you said, animal.

If it was just me, I wouldn't be as worried. I'm just super worried of getting in an accident with them in the car. I've had someone spin out on the free way and almost hit me before, so I'm just paranoid.

Yes, I am more concerned for their safety than my own 😛

I have a friend staying over Christmas I know would watch them, but the cats are ancient (honestly amazed they both lasted the semester....), so I don't want to really leave them for two weeks.

Just had a strange thought - aviaries are home to birds, ovaries are home to ova.

This musing from the tired brain of Ceph has been brought to you by the letter Y as well as the ischiobulbosus muscle.

(Anatomy final tomorrow. SOS.)
I don't remember learning that muscle, what does it do?
