I am just now seeing that many schools require two semesters of math. I placed into Calc 1 as a freshman and that is the only math class I've taken besides stats. Does it matter that I didn't take two semesters? I think that'd be awful if I'm penalized because I placed into calc and if someone takes pre calc and calc they have the two semesters accounted for but I don't.. Thanks in advance!

I'm not even sure if pre-calc can even count towards the math prereq anyway but stats count as math so you have 2 semesters. At my school, they separate the calc semesters by differential and integral and most people only take the first semester. I don't think any of the premeds at my school have had a problem with it.

[post implying that OP is fine because he has AP credit for calc 1]

Most med schools don't recognize AP credits. OP's concerns are justified.

OP, you'll be limited to schools that require only 1 semester of math, or recognize AP credits. However, if you've taken a computer science course or some other math heavy course (like psychological statistics) often schools will accept that in lieu of an actual math course.

It does. I got a 5 on the AP exam but retook both pre-calc and calc 1 in college. Those were the only math classes I took, and they fulfill the prereqs just fine.

Read the OP again. OP took calc 1 and stats. Many schools will accept that as two semesters of math.

Honestly I would just retake them. If you can do well, then you'll have a "free" A that will be included in your BCPM GPA when you apply. 😀

Wtf universe are you in where stats is not a math class?

Stats isn't technically a math class and at a lot of universities there is a separate stats department

Am I mistaken in believing the pretty much all med schools accept Stats + Calc 1 as the year of math? That's all I did and it was never an issue for AMCAS classification or the individual applications.

I know HMS used to require Calc 2, but they dropped that a year or two ago.

Just apply and if you get accepted somewhere that requires more math, take more math before matriculating. Problem solved.

Thanks everyone! If stats and Calc 1 count, I'm good to go! 😀 And to the person who told me to take more as a cushion, I'm applying in like 15 days so no BCPM boost.. lol
