So here's a weird thing. Over the holidays I ran into a family friend at a party. This woman's daughter got an MD at the school with my top-choice MSTP program, where I'm gratefully interviewing in a few weeks. The daughter kind of works in my field (she's in Public Health, I'm an epidemiologist) but I wouldn't exactly say she's a scientist. Anyway, the doctor's mom reported that her daughter had spontaneously volunteered to write a letter to the admissions committee on my behalf. I've only met the daughter once, and while it was a great encounter that actually wound up influencing my career choices because I admire her very much, I have no idea why it would make her want to write me a letter.
In the opinion of the forum, should I take her up on her kind offer? I guess she can speak to my potential as a clinician or my fit for this particular school, but she doesn't know me very well. Is it one of those situations where one more letter can't hurt, or might it come off as me trying to exploit a personal connection?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
