Dear Friends,

I have been trying to figure out my rank list and am having a hard time on deciding between two programs and which one to rank higher than the other, thus I am seeking your help. I am torn b/w these 2 programs

Program A is a new program in the NY area with solid teaching, good patient population and diversity, nice facilities, and the biggest thing is that it is near my home, however I felt that it lacked in procedures and trauma experience.

Program B is a well established program in Detroit. It has a heavy patient population load, the pathology is diverse, and tons of procedures. However, it is in the Detroit area and the hospital is run down.

My question is, Do procedures really matter in the grand scheme of things? I mean after the 3 yrs, I assume that I will get all the procedures needed to graduate and should be well apt at doing them. Does it really matter say if one does 20 chest tubes, central lines, etc vs someone who has done 100.

Please tell me your thoughts,

Anyone? Someone?

If it were me, I'd pick the Detroit program (not sure which NY program you're talking about). But those Detroit programs are the ****, and residents come out of there able to handle anything. When you see the worst of the worst like you do in Detroit, you can pretty much go anywhere and do anything after that.

Thank you for the reply. The NY program is Staten Island. I agree with you on the strengths of the detroit program, however it's Detroit, MI. :scared:

Anyone else? Any other thoughts.

Location, location, location... nothing else is important. You will be well-trained anywhere you go. Pick a place where you really enjoy going out on a Saturday night because that's the only catharsis you're going to have.
