hi guys, i was wondering for a semi-well rounded applicant \(did research, in school organizations + officer positions volunteer-work) with a rank of 26/100.........would it be possible to specialize?? or do you really have to be top 10......now i know ortho/omfs is realllllllllly competitive but what about the others? (pedo-perio-endo..)

any feedback would be good

Don't specialize just to specialize. Your decision to enter a field should not be based on which you can gain entry into. Your class rank is good, decide which one you'd be HAPPIEST doing and apply.

I'm not hoping to JUST specialize for the heck of it, i'm mainly interested in pedo, but I was just curious how some of the other specialties were, more specifically if you had to be top ten to do ANY specialty.

your rank is fine for pedo. just get low 90's or better on boards and apply to a lot of programs.

perio/prosth - you are guaranteed to get into, even with mid-80's boards, as long as you apply to numerous programs.

OMFS is not "REALLLLLY" competitive despite what you think. the top programs, yes. but if you just want to get in somewhere it's not that hard. do externships. 90+ on boards. last year, an acquaintance of mine had a HORRIBLE class rank, OKAY boards (93), and NO extracurriculars, and still landed 12 interviews.

🙂Thanks for the info

sorry should clarify. horrible was an exaggeration, just that it would be considered "horrible" compared to the stereotypical OMFS applicant. 3.3 GPA at a school that has grade inflation, which put him at ~35%. not horrible by any means, now that i think of it. but i was surprised that a 35%, 93 board landed him 12 interviews.

Yes, I'd like to know too. Please share.
