Hi everyone. First of all wanted to say thanks to all those who give their own time and help us posters with all the various questions we may have. I really appreciate it, and it's always nice to see.

So as the ROL deadline is a month away, I am starting to finalize my list. I was wondering if some of you could share some thoughts about my top several places. Right now I am thinking about doing a fellowship once residency is over, but that's definitely not set in stone, and there is a chance I might change my mind and choose general practice instead.

With that being said, currently these are my top 3 spots:

Hofstra LIJ Cohen Children's Medical Center: this was the place where I got the best vibes from the residents. It's a large program, and while it doesn't have the name of some of the other places I checked out, it seems like they are very invested in resident education, and match people quite well for fellowships. In terms of location, I would either live close to the hospital in Long Island and be relatively close to NYC, or live in Queens (Astoria possibly) and be extremely close to NYC with a short commute. Another plus is that I have a lot of friends who live in NYC.

MGH - in terms of resident education and fellowship matches, I was impressed. It seemed like the residents here work very hard but are happy with where they are and what they do. However, although I got along with the residents fine, didn't feel as good as the Hofstra resident vibes. I like Boston a lot as a place to live.

Cincinnati Children's - definitely the place with the most prestige I interviewed at. Huge program, got along well with the residents. It seemed like they were a little more chilled out and laid back than the MGH residents. Obviously would set me up the best for fellowship matches. I got along well with the residents. One big downside is the location - don't have any friends of family nearby, and honestly I didn't get to stay too long and check out Cincinnati.

right now those are my top 3. Im thinking of ranking Hofstra first - do you guys think it's silly to rank somewhere like that over Cincy for example? People say that we will get a similar education in most places we go to, and it's important to choose a place where we will be happy for 3 hard and busy years. Another caveat/question - would any of these places give me a better chance than another at fellowship/general practice positions in California (where I'm from, family+friends are there) once finished with residency?

Anyways, sorry for the long post! thanks in advance for your opinions and thoughts 🙂

I'd recommend going where ever you are going to be the happiest for the next 3 years. Your chances of fellowship will increase with what you do during your 3 years (research, holding admin positions, etc) more than just what residency you go to. Best of luck in the match!

That sounds reasonable, and is what I was thinking myself. Thanks for your response. Any other thoughts, on my situation in particular or the programs I listed in general?

I think if you have any preferences you should throw that into making your decision. Mine was 1. Children's hospital, and 2. Fitting in well with residents. I've had an enjoyable intern year because I got exactly what was important to me.
