I was wondering if any current residents could shed some light on how programs make their rank lists.... I'm sure not every program does it the same way but I know some have categories like "ranked to match" "other people we liked but not as much" etc... Does anyone have any info about this?

And also If there is a "ranked to match" category.... can't that only be as many people as they have spots for? like if they have 3 spots in the match, can't that category only have 3 people?

Anyways thank you and good luck this week to everyone in the match!!

Hey good luck. How many ranked programs are on ur ROL?

Depends program to program. some rank according to schools u are from (US, then DO, then US IMGs n then IMGs) others have a fair process and grade each applicant during interview and add up scores

Still in med school, but I've heard that some schools will use the term "ranked to match" to people ranked high enough to match in their average year. Say a program has 3 spots and normally has to go down to #10 to fill those spots, they'd say that the top 10 people are "ranked to match". I personally think that's a terrible way to phrase it. But I'm sure each individual program has its own way of doing it.

Are u a US grad or a US IMGs or what. Generally of u have 10+ interviews and assuming u didn't mess up u are okay!

Nrmp has very strict post-IV communication guidelines and has prevented programs to tell anything to applicants regarding match or how they ranked you. Most programs are not participating in any such communication now. they might reply to a thank you note and answer ur questions but do NOT give any hint whatsoever. Some might reply to your thank you note and say u are a good candidate and hope to see u etc vaguely. Most post don't talk about ranked to match stuff anymore

Just want to say that's not entirely accurate, although I agree whole heartedly that programs are trying to cut down on post interview communication that might be misconstrued. Programs and applicants can actually tell each other whatever they want regarding where they are ranked etc. the only thing that is illegal is saying "I'll rank you 1 if you rank me 1"

Nope, nope, nope. No rules against telling you anything, or you telling programs anything you want. The restriction is in being coercive about it (on the program's side). Lots of programs have post-rank communication, lots don't.

As to the OP's question, there are only 2 categories. Rank and Do Not Rank.

Lego, I ranked 10 places.
Thanks to everyone who answered... For a follow up question. If you're a resident at a place and you're sending "we think you'd be a good fit" emails... are you instructed to not "give anything away" in your post IV contact?

This is what I received from a couple of programs:

1) I, along with the rest of the interviewers, appreciated the opportunity to meet with you and discuss your career goals and plans during your interview. There is a high degree of commonality between your training goals, professional plans and interest, and the kind of training that we can provide you. We are very optimistic that our training program will meet both your training needs and professional interests. We intend to give your application our strongest consideration as we assemble our program rank order list!

2) # 2 program on my rol replying to me: Thanks for the exciting update

3) my #1 didn't reply me but to my preceptor: thanks very much. Ur description of XYZ matches well with what I have seen of him

Not sure what to make of these of anyone seemed genuine or not

Don't over read this kind of stuff. Hopefully you ranked where you would be happiest and the rest will play out as it should. If you interviewed at 10 places the odds are in your favor

I did twice that number but between 2 specialties

I wasn't trying to be cold. I believe in him and he was anxious just like we all were.
