I am set on my first two program, but I need help deciding between my #3-5 programs. I am interested in interventional or vascular neurology later. Kindly offer me feedback regarding my current rank list:

1. Loyola University
2. Louisiana State University (New Orleans)
3 . University of Kentucky

I'm sorry; I have no familiarity with any of those programs. I would imagine Louisiana State has abundant strokes given the local diet. 🙂

Thanks. Loyola is among best programs but bad Chicago weather. It's on top likely

UK is in bad location. Lexington less lively n a very tiny sirport.
LSU is a smaller program than UK but New Orleans very lively and fun.
(Overall I think both of the programs are equivalent)

interviewed at UK only out of these 3
loved the program and people.. program mostly since it had most of the sub specialties being offered! its near to Louisville and Cincinnati too!
did anybody go to Ohio State? what was your impression?

very true...i think Loyola is slightly better than the other two and more prestigiuous...UK was great and a solid program...but LSU is most ideal for me in terms of location, weather, and a new hospital. Overrall, all three are solid programs to get into a competitive fellowship

I would rank Loyola last unless you absolutely have to live in Chicago no matter what. The program is fairly known for being malignant. It is an extremely tough program. There have been threads on this already on SDN and on scutwork.com. .

And I say this without even knowing much about LSU or Kentucky.

Cons: Thanks I agree LOYOLA is very malignant and PD was open. They have many 24-hr calls and no NF system. Heavy wkday n wkend calls during G2-3 and also calls during G4 (no wkend). It's rough. No moonlighting!!!
Personally I hate Chicago weather and am not a big city type person.

Pros: very reputable program ans best among three above. Mostly AMGs

LSU vs UKY: location is much better for both but Lexington small town without airport. I love New Orleans. UK (5) is bigger size than LSU (3). Issue is both have 70% IMGs. So am confused s little. Though both good hospitals and nice programs. Less workload in each than Loyola. Weather much better.

Got a snail mail Loyola Letter:
s
"I have no doubt you wll be a great fit within our program and we will be delighted to work with you over the next four years.....We would all be thrilled if you became part of the team!"

seemed generic but came i snail mail...2 page document highlighting positives of the program.....any take guys???

am still confused if to rank Duke Psychiatry #1 or neurology programs (I equally like both!!)...think Neuro pays well compared to psyc?

...think Neuro pays well compared to psyc?
Forget the dough. Which one do you like better? Gut feeling… that first one that came to mind without thinking too much is probably (maybe) the answer.

wish dealine was today so I will make a snap decision. I keep changing my list daily! well...preferably Neurology is more prestigious (more respect, competitive, and higher salary) vs Psyc (lifestyle). A couple of psyc programs I interviewed are very prestigious (Duke, Tulane) vs Neuro (fairly above average/decent programs)

When I interviewed at Loyola a couple of years back, I thought the program was mostly IMG's. Of course things may have changed since then. Regardless of that, I would say go wherever you feel that you can thrive.

You do want to go to a residency program that gives you a good volume of diverse cases, but there is also a difference between that and scutting you out to do frequent 24-30 hr neuro call and round for 10-12 hours everyday for all three years of your residency. As a soon to be neurologist in training, you want to go to a program where you actually leaves you some time to read (VERY IMPORTANT!) and one that values resident education.

Most Neurology programs are front loaded, meaning that you do most of the work during PGY2 year and then it gets much easiar. That's not the impression that I have of Loyola. Getting routinely hit with 20 consults during your calls eventually provides diminishing returns in the learning department.

i keep changing my mind...wish deadline was today and i'll make a blind decision..am happy with either one (both w pros and cons). personally i love both...financially not sure how much is income difference?

thanks! seems u are doing residency now....currently Loyola is 65% AMGs and 35% IMGs (many Latin Americans bc of Chair).

i agree it is very call heavy program with many 24hr calls all years of training (inc PG-4), PD was very open about working hours here. said he will try to switch to NF system in near future...i don't think will happen soon...they have 4+2 system...4 wks rotation w 24 hr calls, 1 week clinic without call, 1 week elective w 24hr call.

i totally agree Loyola is not front loaded...it is more or so same and malignant throughout 4 years.

this leave me UKY vs LSU? LSU is opening a brand new hospital this year...plus I love New Orleans...though it is a much smaller program class size than UK (3 vs 5)

I only went to UK out of these
just wanted to let u know I catched a flight from their airport (though It was v v tiny!)
I stayed in Lexington for 4 days and enjoyed a lot..There were predominantly I'M G'S but seemed to be of great caliber (compared to IMgS at some other places) ..also the day I interviewed there was no IMG Applicant!
the pc at UK was great too (maybe it would matter to some)
The pd is fairly young ..mayo grad..but seemed v approachable and friendly!

Uk had a night float system too..and people matched at standford vandy etc ..but the city does not have much to offer sadly!
does anyone know how much vacation do we get at UK?

Yes it is a very tiny program. Has all foreign students and I think Dr. Smith trying to reverse the trend...yes very approachable. Did u get reply back to ur thank you letters? Any feedback/hopes?

How are u ranking it in comparison to other programs? I like the program but hate the location. Very confused

If not mistaken its 2 weeks first prelim year and 3 weeks years after that. N yes it's a very boring city. Am not sure where to rank it in comparison to LSU or Loyola

Oh ok somehow I recall someone telling me we get 4 weeks off!!
Maybe I heard wrong
Dr Smith had replied but nothing extraordinary... said he looks forward to training Me and hopes our paths cross!any luck on your side?!

It's my top 2 programs so I sent a letter of high interest. He just replied short sentence: thanks for exciting update.

One interviewer liked me and said am a good boy and put strong words for me, but was only 1 guy.

How are u ranking it?

Am ranking in too 3 due to location closer to home

I am ranking it #3 myself !
did u interview anywhere in the Texas state ?

Oh God I felt the same!:/
where r u ranking it
I was going to rank it 2 cuZ of the city(tons of family!)
What exactly did u feel

Ranking it way down the list am confused as I'm into Neuro research and it has strong research. But it's a very big city and I hate Houston traffic. Am from Mid South.

How many programs are u ranking total?

I'm ranking 10.. what about u

I am an IMG from Pakistan But been in Memphis since past 4 months
