So I have been getting some conflicting info and was wondering if someone could clear it up.

Someone told me to put a prelim medicine or two at the bottom of my list just in case I do not match into one of my anesthesia programs so I have somewhere to go for the first year atleast. But then someone said not to do this because if I end up matching into one of these prelim medicine programs then I will not be able to scramble for an anesthesia spot.

Any thoughts? What are people doing regarding this?

i have been told that it is highly highly unlikely to scramble into anesthesiology anyways.

I asked this same question to my registrar and she stated that if you place it at the bottom and match into it the email on March 17th will state that you have matched into a 1 year position.

My understanding is that you will still be able to scramble. With all that said, I would contact NRMP, and they can clarify that. The official word is probably better than anything you can get from anonymous sources.

Best of luck, hope you match.🙂

1)More than likely you would only be able to scramble into an advanced program.
2)few people get a spot in the scramble
3) The other option is to scramble prelim

Straight from the NRMP FAQ:
http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/faq/us_seniors_faq.html#new01

Applicants will be presented with one of the following messages on the Applicant Options page:

3. Congratulations, you have matched to a one year position!

This message will be displayed for any applicant who matched to a preliminary position but did not match to an advanced position listed on the primary rank order list. Applicants who receive this message will have access to the Dynamic List of Unfilled Programs and are eligible to participate in the post-match Scramble for unfilled positions to obtain an advanced position; however, applicants may not use the Scramble to obtain a categorical position or a different preliminary position.
