I'm a MSIV Army HPSP student.

I'm interested in radiology and pathology but thinking of just doing a transitional year to allow more time for the decision.

Here is how I think my rank list would look like..

1) TY - Tripler
2) TY - Madigan
3) TY - SAUSHEC
4) TY - Walter Reed
5) Prelim Radiology - Any place

Does this make sense???

Do I have to telephone interview with all these programs?

Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction...

Unless things have changed, radiology at the institution where you do your TY lets you continue right into you PGY-2 year, so you have to interview for radiology and be serious about it. If you interview and tell them there is a good chance you could bolt after TY, I hate to say it, you will not be taken seriously.

What I am saying is this, you are NOT going to start into your TY, interview for a PGY-2 spot in radiology and get picked up, other TYs in your intern class will already be pre-selected.

Also, consider the following situation. If you get a TY and preselected into Rads and later in your MSIV year decide that you would rather have done path, you pretty much have to start applying for path the day you show up for your internship. Its not like you can go that whole TY year and sit on it and think about it. Sorry, if you do that, you will get picked up as a GMO and have plenty of more time to think about it.

Sorry, not what you want to hear, but just make up your mind within a month and get it over with.

Not entirely true. A recent graduate of my program did just that, so it's not unheard of. It is definitely not a good way to go about it though, because you are much more likely to have to do a GMO rather than continue your training without interruption. Unfortunately, the Army punishes indecision in these instances. Even if you are sure to be picked up as an MSIV, you are unlikely to be picked up as an intern because you are no longer in the same applicant pool.

Also, if you're not sure if you'd rather be a radiologist or pathologist, then I would not rank TAMC first, since there is no pathology residency there. On the other hand, if you're sure enough about radiology that you want to put your eggs in the Tripler basket, then you'd be much better off just applying to radiology.

Sure there are always exceptions to the case, but I wouldn't recommend it. When I was in intern, there was a TY that was picked up for EM after his internship year. But guess, what, there was also 2 other interns that wanted EM that got shipped out as GMOs. Again, wouldn't recommend it.
