Does anyone else who is married or has children find UCSF, Columbia and LA fiscally untenable?

UCSF has a $600 per month housing stipend to help with costs of living.
CHLA has subsidized housing.
I believe Columbia also has subsidized housing but the rents are still astronomical (at least $1200 per month to rent a place).

600 is like a drop in the bucket in San Fran, CHLA's subsidized housing is a dorm life and really not suitable for residents with kids, and Columbia doesn't have subsidized housing, Cornell does. Wish I had thought of those things before interviewing 🙂

Well, either don't go to the programs or live somewhere (and potentially have a longer commute) that's cheaper. You really can't have your cake and eat it too.

I could have sworn that I was told at my interview that Columbia offers $2,000 housing stipend.
As far as rent, Washington Heights/Inwood probably has some decent deals as far as Manhattan rent (1200-1700 for one bedroom). Columbia also offers parking that is 70$ out of the paycheck bi-weekly. $140 isn't too bad for parking and might expand commuting options.

Coordinating a match with a highly specialized spouse's job hunt stinks. I love the first 8-10 programs on my list. The real suspense is whether he'll get a job in the locations that we think most likely. Which particular location I'll go to get good training is not a big deal, unless it traps him somewhere he can't get a job.
